Doing a cambelt on my 8 is it worth doing anything else at the same time.

Yea buy a timing belt kit and change the timing bely, balance shaft belt, timing belt idler pulley, timing belt tensioner pulley and balance shaft pulley.

theres one on ebay £100 says its a genuine kit.

has all those parts you mention.

would you bother doing a water pump?

No not unless its leaking. Just make sure its OE equipment and GATES or BLUEPRINT.

Any idea what I can use instead of the special tools needed to lock the engine in position?

U can buy these for like £10 mate not that dear, ive made them before but after 3 or 4 times they break.

Very good set of angled long nose pliers will let you away. But if you buff the nose then your out a pair of pliers

are they just used to lock the cam sprockets? can just use a drill bit like on any other engine?

im guessing the tool is dealer only? might have a look on ebay!

Believe me you wont use a drill bit as that trick wont work on an evo mate and you need a tensioner tool also. Have found a place upo can get them from cheap here is the link...
