Boost problem

Looking for a bit of help. I have just brought a Evo 7 and i have a problem when it starts to make boost, it is very hesitant slight misfire and feels very sluggish.
It has a cheep ss manifold and i think it is blowing a bit as i can see some black soot around the block. Would this cause the problem? or is it something else? spark plugs coil packs? Any help would be appreciated.

Change the plugs straight away. The mani blowing would just sound awful wouldn't cause it to hesitate although would run at peak. Have you got a boost gauge fitted? Have you done a boost leak test

Got some new plugs today so that's tomorrows job. There is a boost gauge fitted not sure what its reading as its a bit small will need a passenger to read while i drive . How do you do a boost leak test???

Sounds like plugs to me or as its cold out at the mo turbo cars tend to run a bit more boost so could be fuel cut

It would b like hitting a brick wall if its a fuel cut. I would stick with plugs and do boost leak test. On a 7 I think 1.2 bar is the norm pressure if its same as the 8

How do i do a boost leak test??

Right i have changed the plugs and the problem is still there:cry:
The car will boost nice untill around .9 of a bar then between .9 and 1.3 is starts to sound really bad almost like a Subaru and is really sluggish.
The car has been mapped by powerstation so the fuel cut should be raised shouldn't it? i have checked all pipes clips and all seem ok. There is a forge dump valve and actuator.
Anybody help me:cry:

Not sure what it was mapped to but the old owner said it was running 350, and im pretty sure it has a evo 9 turbo.
Yea it holding boost ok the gauge is holding 1.3 bar. so you think its coil packs? how can i check them?
Forgot to say the car had been stood around for 2 months unused. And there was some water in the number 1 spark plug hole.

Plugs fitted were nkp something like that? got them off ant @ indgo, but they were for my old evo 5

strange how you got water in the cylinder. as long as coil packs and plug cover was fitted then there is no way rain could get in there. ant would have sent you right plugs so my next idea would be to check to see if you water level has dropped cos strange how water is getting into cylinder. does it start ok ? no more than say 1-2 seconds turning the key

The water was around the nut of the spark plug, so the rubber boot from the coil pack was wet. The anti freeze is a pink colour so i dont think it is water from the coolant the water was a yellow colour. I dried it out and took it for a drive and it stayed dry?
Yes the car starts fine.

yea that eliminates that problem. id try swapping coilpacks from another evo just to eliminate them

Took the coil pack off put them in the airing cupboard over night. Took the forge d/v off and put a old plastic d/v on and the car is running spot on boosting up to 1.4-1.5 bar
Could it have been the d/v?????

Dv are fine in Evo and in some you prob need a copy of evoscan and a Tactrix cable or use a Mut tool to reset the base idol but I'm not to sure if that would effect your boost my mate had an idol problem with his hks dv and he took it to a mapper and that how the mapper sorted it

Ive only just brought the car, i am getting it mapped quite soon if i can find someone to do it.
Not to sure about the d/v but i can push the piston back quite easily. Could it be the wrong spring in?

What sort of fb is it ? And if you can push it back then sounds a bit soft so could well be leaking boost.

Alan Jeffery of enginetuner ltd is based in plymouth.

He does work on Evos, has a rolling road, does tuning, aftermarket turbos etc. I'm sure he'd be worth a call.

I spoke to him about a TT S209 turbo for my 9. He's a decent bloke
