boost problem???

hi guys,

I recently bought myself a Evo viii mr fq320. The problem i have is at around 5600-6000 RPM when i'm booting it quite a bit the car seems to hickup and loose boost suddenly and them come straight back on boost. Is this a common problem, if a problem at all?? I'm guessing this shouldn't happen but there is no smoke from the engine/turbo at all and other than this everything is as sweet as a nut.

Not that I know of no, as far as I know it's standard and not been played with much. It has a dump valve and I think the exhaust is aftermarket.

I cannot see a make on the dv. Did they come as standard on this model??

Hi buddy and welcome to the Forum!!!

Recirculating Dump Valves do come as standard on all Evo's.

Does it happen when you drive it to 6000 RPM at a steady pace (not booting it)???

I suggest that you check all vacuum pipes as well as your plugs/fuelling.

Not tried just getting slowly to 6000 RPM but will do later on when I'm out! Any gear inparticular to try this in?? Cheers

Any gear will do.

Carry out all the other checks that I have advised while you are at it.

It may be a fuelling or ignition issue, could be that the actuator is sticking too.

is it a violent jolt or more of a stutter when it happens........sounds spark plug related.

Right El, I tried taking it steady up to 6000 RPM and the the "hickup" didn't happen like that! I think it is happening more when it is cold outside!! Could this be the turbo overboosting because the air is denser the colder it is? I will check out the actuator as soon as I can as well!-hopefully tomorrow sometime. Cheers again for you help! Spinners it is quite a violent jolt, no problems at any other time so wouldn't have thought it would be on the ignition side of things but I could be totally totally wrong!!

I suspect that it is an airflow/under fuelling related issue buddy but would not rule out the actuator just yet.

Check that all pipes are on correctly.

What mods do you have in place??

As far a I know it is standard but the exhaust does look a bit big to be so think it may be an aftermarket one! Like I say the problem seems worse when it's colder outside! Would it be worth me trying to hook it up to a diagnostics kit if I can get my hands on one??

if its a violent cut and happens more in cold weather then it is most certainly boost cut.

if its only started happening recently without any mods being done to the car then get the actuator checked out like in the thread El posted.
