Bonnet Raisers

I always keep an eye on cars that are for sale and it seems that more and more that i look at have bonnet raisers on them, what is the point of them? To me it makes an otherwise nice looking car look crap, it makes some cars look like they've been in smash and the bonnet not lined up properly.
I do not mean to offend anyone on here who has them, but i really don't like them.
What do other people on here think of them?

one of my mates had them on his starlet gt, he used to say it was for air flow, to get rid of hot air and draw in cold. i thought it looked like he hadnt closed his bonnet properly!!!!!

Its supposed to let heat out. More use in slow moving traffic really. Have occasionally run them on rally car in summer. After a road section the turbo and engine can be warm, especially when combined with funny fuel and a decent map so to be able to keep the under bonnet temps down it can help keep a highly strung motor healthy.

I doubt they do much at speed due to the air pressure at the base of the screen.

I think they looks good on the rally car, but thats a rugged looking car. I wouldnt put them on a road car.

The 1st time I saw this done was on a corsa with a calibra engine conversion,n it looked good but personaly I wouldn't do it to my evo,I don't think it would look right,jus seems a waste of time

I have always known them to be used to keep the under-bonnet temperatures low and to also maintain a good level of air-flow.

It's one of these things that was a matter of function over form and it has now slid the other way in people minds. It's to make their car look like a hardcore track machine when it really isn't all that necessary. The best ways to keep the temperatures down include liberal application of heat-shields and cutting a socking great scoop into it which funnels out the arches etc etc.

Zircotec makes very tough paints which act as a heat-shield, effective: Yes, Pricey: OMG

its huge over here in ireland! every 2nd jap car ya see has it done wudn be a fan of it looks likes sumtins wrong wit the front the car. my gf has it done on her typer and ppl do be always knockin on the window tellin her that the bonnets open i gives her sum stick bout it but she think it looks cool so i suppose every1 to their own...

I guess heat rises out of it at low speed and stationary, but there is a huge hole in the bottom of the car under the engine ;-) that does the job. Can you still have the gap and have the bonnet secure? Stop people opening it up and stealing your babies guts out??
