Big Decision

Just spoke to rg regarding my e4 after a serious mishap last week which turned out to be too much pressure and the dipstick being blown out of its hole Anyway a compression test was run and it seems like I am really running low on this. I have to make the decision of either replacing the rings on the original engine or buy another engine Speaking for myself I am swayed to replacing the rings as I would like to keep the original engine. Any members have any advice or point me in the right direction.

How much is it going to cost you to replace the rings? What sort of condition was the engine in before the problem?
Check end float in the crank before you do anything as that might make the decision for you on a 4 engine.

Not sure, just been on ebay and a set of rings are £80, going to see what the garage say when I go and pick it up. The engine was spot on before the mishap but apparantley it all ties in to the dipstick blowing because its breathing very heavily.

As said above check movement in crank with a dial gauge before you make decision on rings

What is the mileage on the engine ?

If you go with the rings there is so much more you will need to get done at the same time

+1 on this one to be fair your best bet would be go for a later engine

I would go for the latest engine you could find in your budget, a set of rings is not the end of the cost and I'd put money on the bores am out of spec

Any engine past the 4 is better but u can't run an evo 9/10 engine due to the mivec

I would personally go for a 5/6 engine due to cost but don't buy it without hearing it run first

Fitting a mivec engine is quite doable but the usual thing is to fit e5/6

It's not uncommon to pop the dipstick out cause of worn orings, and you tend to find people run a spring to hold the dipstick in, which I would do before condemning the engine

Bloody hell paul if I had seen this before, I guess the compression was low before all this mess happened.
