A decent snap on set will set you back some real pretty pennies, my dad only ever buys snap on for him and I have a f1 mag tools box with sockets included which I prefer to the snap on ones because they are black in a blue box :)

I have a halfords set I use at home and the mag are at my dads workshop and had no probs with halfords ones, the older ratchets used to busy the first time you use em but these have taken some real stick

i have pretty much done a whole engine removal with my halfords pro 1/4 drive ratchet socket set :)
and yes they do replace ratchets when the teeth wear out. nothing to do with the bar i had slid over the end of it :whistling:

Cant beat halfords for the price. I use them day in day out and havent broken any in 3 years. And theyre lifetime guarantee if you do. Blue point are double the price of halfords and snap on make them seem cheap.

i dont do a terrible amount but i get pi**sed off when i get into a tight spot and theres no room to get a socket on i always think to myself "this would be so much easier with a rachet spanner" lol

open end ratchet spanners are the way forward

Hi everyone, just thought i'd mention a set i bought recently which is awesome! chicago brand uk open end ratchet spanners. It's a USA company but now sell in the UK with real fast delivery. The metric open end ratchet set i got is superb quality, same as snap on i.e stainless steel and comes with a lifetime guarantee. Cheap too only £82.50! They do a 3 piece set which has two different size heads on each spanner so you get 6 sizes in 3 spanners, all open end ratchet design. Saved loads of time over my regular spanners and can now go where ring ratchets can't like brake pipes, hoses etc.
Hope this was useful, sorry for the lengthy thread, got carried away! :D

All my tools are halfords and have never had any probs at all and get a lifetime warranty anyway so just take it into the shop and replace it for you and if you know anyone with a trade card you get a good discount of them also

Just to add my cents worth, bluepoint ones are a no go :( have to replace 10mm 13mm and 17mm as they are skipping gears most the time now and there is no way of taking apart and cleaning says mr snap on. To be fair they have done a good duty and gets daily abuse always used correctly and I suppose even the best have to let go at some point but they have only lasted 2 years

I've got the little 1/4" drive socket set. It really is the best tool in the box. Gets the most use and I did once take the engine out of a civic with just the 1/4 drive set. Ok the ratchet did struggle after I undone a gearbox mount with it, had a jack handle over end of ratchet for leverage but halfords did exchange it when I took it back complaining it keeps slipping teeth lol :)
