Just some info. on our first problem with an evo :-
we encountered a 'scary' high pitched noise/whine in the rear axle of 96 evo.although we have experience ( 35 yrs approx. in sales and repair ) of most 'normal' vehicles we had minimal experience of these high performance cars.Experience told us to consult with an expert which we duly did ( with heads bowed and cap in hand in respect!).We were instructed to change the dif. fluids ie. both fluids in the diff.casing and check the dipstick in boot for level of sealed system (also cleanliness of this oil which would indicate a change was necessary).We changed both diff. fluids (deemed sealed oil was 'OK') and the vehicle now sounds like a 'mouse chewing paper!'
Hard to believe that an oil change would have silenced such a noise. Total cost of both oils £22 ayc (from mitsubishi local franchise) two litres, plus £18 one litre castrol syntax,( from local BMW motorcycle franchise!) one hour maximum time consumed,cheap fix and also gives peace of mind for approx. 5k miles at least.Hope this info. is helpful to other owners if similar noise occurs.Alex.
