"Apologies" Newbie advice

First and foremost, I do know a few things about cars but I am looking for expert advice.

I have come accross from the Pulsar GtiR community and know just about enough about them.

I am basically looking to but an Evo 4 but would like to either have the engine rebuilt or replaced to reinforce reliability as I have heard about the piston problem with the 4 engine which was corrected with the 6 engine.

I am basically after advice as to wether it is best to buy and knackered one and have either the engine replaced or 6 upgraded or to buy one that has already had the upgrade done?

My mentality is, if the engine is out, do everything that needs to be done.

All feedback would be greatly appreciated.;

ps. The only reason I am asking this, is because I owned 2 pulsars before this which both turned out to have major internal problems. I then when on to buy a 4 which had the piston ring problem which resulted in low compression. I also live very close to RG Motorsport.

Thanks,

Lewis

If its defo a IV you want then buy one with a replaced V engine or later.

DO NOT rebuild a 4 block, it's the design of the block that causes the main problem.

The only reason I am after the IV is because of the insurance. For some reason it increases immensely when I get quoted for a 5, 6 or 7 etc. Should I then buy one with a knackered engine and have the 5 engine fitted then?

Thanks for the quick reply

Yes that would be the ideal way round it. But broken oe tend to get. Sold as parts.

Or buy a decent one but be in the knowledge that the engine may let go and make plans to fund a swap if the engine does let go.

There are plenty round that have later engines go for one of those. If you buy one with a blown engine there coup be all manner of other problems,

Martin @ evo salvage has got a evo 4 car with no engine and he probably has a engine there to....

Are there other common problems I need to watch out for or are you simply saying if one bit is broken others probably are?

Thanks

I have seen a few on eBay with major engine problems go very cheap compared to one that is running.

My trail of thought was to buy one of these ones and trailer it back to my house, where I would take the engine out and check everything over (turbo etc) and have a new 5 engine fitted by a specialist.

The reasons for doing it this way are that I don't need to drive it as I have another car and I am fed up of basically getting screwed over with dodgy cars that end up cost me a fortune. I would rather spend the money in a constructive way and have something running at a safe spec that I know will be reliable.

Thanks for the advice

Ayc faults will rear their ugly head once you have put an engine in it, gearbox issues? Any part of the drivetrain really you can't check if the engine is gone.

How ever Martin at evo salvage is a top bloke comes highly recommended so if he says engine missing but all else good take his word for it, and you can buy an engine from his with peace of mind too

think there is a good few traders about with spare motors, Martin is a top bloke, had a number of parts off him. Sure indigo should have bits they have been breaking a number of cars recently.

for all the hassle why not buy a V or VI?? After all its not just the engine you will want, going to be looking at brakes..... ;)

I could possibly got to the V or VI but was just concerned over the insurance being quite a bit more for some reason and then finding the problems that I always seem find with cars.

I was just hoping for something that I can spend a bit on to get reliablilty and then maybe a few extra horses for fun. I'm not looking at massive spec, just want it to run something over 300bhp.

I have seen a few IV's go for 2k on ebay so my plan was to get one like that and put it in straight away for an engine swap which I was hoping would get rid of the common future problems.

Do they just end up going over time or is it because they tend to be running too high spec?

Can be either.

Do some research google "Crank walk evo 4" that's the main problem you'll get plenty of hits. From what I remember its potentially the pressure from the clutch that causes it, but it's down to a design fault with the block itself.

If your going to go for a 4 with a later engine in then do some research on how to find the engine code on the block so you don't lied too.

They are limited with the ecu too, injectors and possibly turbo, also width of tyres and brakes.

If I was you I'd be looking at one with at least some form of ecu upgrade and Bremno conversion.

If you choose to do all that yourself, the out lay may be worth taking the hit on a V or VI and paying the insurance.

How old are you and where have you tried insurance at?

Thanks again for the advice.

I did say I was on a budget but I won't quibble over a few hundred if I am going to get a lot more for my money.

I would love to get a V or VI but its simply the insurance being about 700 more at least for some unknown resaon.

I am 27 and have 5 years no claims and live in a very good area and have a garage. Only problem is, I was banned 3 years ago for 9 months which only makes a difference of a couple of hundred literally.

Best quote I have had so far was £1300 on a standard IV with my dad on the policy and from a company called Good Girl!!!

I have only had quotes from confused.com

Confused are pretty poor with any form of jap import, so do some research on insurance companies for evos too. I'm same age as you and paid around £800 on my own fully comp.

It's sometimes easier to insure with your own policy, and then two named drivers, key is that the two named drivers are ideally female 40+ with long held licenses. I just put my mum on and it came down about £200!!

Just had a look on ebay and found a few good VI's for under 5k which is pretty good I think. Which company are you with then?
