Anyone Know Anything About The RVR?

G'day folks. A newbie and yes, looking for help.

I'm thinking of buying an RVR (listed as a 'Hyper' if that means anything) and wondered if anyone knows anything about them. It's a grey import ("We know" I hear you groan) so I'm a little concerned about spares. Evo 5 engine they say, anything to be worried about there?

Obviously there'll be some common parts and servicing/tuning should be straightforward for a specialist although bodywork and trim will probably be like hen's teeth. I've seen one advertised as "deristricted" but I'm assuming that means tuned/chipped or tweaked. Standard seems to be in the region of 230bhp with the deristricted one claiming 300bhp. I'm not looking for outrageous performance as I've got plenty of that in another car, I just need something that can do the family thing occasionally, handle some light offroading yet keep me interested on the roads. It's also a bit of a sleeper if you remove the daft, red mudflaps. Oh, automatic or manual? I prefer the latter.

from what i know the rvr is a kind of evo galant, the 5 engine is fine no probs there also no problems the fact thats an import cos fq evos were just imports with different badges anyway. as for de-limiting. all jap cars are limited to 180kph/118 mph and its removed and calibrated to 180mph

Ok, so as I hoped spares and maintenance wouldn't be an issue but isn't de-limiting to do with top speed? The seller I spoke to seemed to think some kind of restriction on bhp had been lifted, sounds unlikely. My guess would be it had other work done. Sadly he had even less Mitsubishi know how than I do and kept saying it was done by a previous owner.

A bit more top heavy than a Galant I think but I still like it:

spares im not sure but if its more or less an evo then servising shouldnt be a prob but youll want to use an evo specialist rather than a mitsi dealer.

jap cars are limited to 180kph the conversion to mph removes this and is part of the sva test that import cars need to have done when they come into the country so this will already be done

Ooops, sorry. Got you confused with steveo on the dongle front (so to speak).

All sounds good then, looks like a plan. Can you suggest a good independent within reasonable distance of East Herts?

The RVR is a good car and I have been on the look out for the right one for quite some time.

They seat 4 including the driver which is the only draw back.

M A developments is the only one that springs to mind. very good with an evo just not suer how far from you

i travel 2hrs or more to my tuner

Travelling isn't too much of an issue, I do that for my other car. Will fill out my profile and haunt these halls in the hope of tips and wisdom.

The RVR is a good car and I have been on the look out for the right one for quite some time.

Have you looked at or driven many? Care to share your findings? Might save me some wasted journies.

They run a TD04 turbo and 300 is pushing it very hard and the top mount intercooler won't push past 280bhp

But they are very good cars as my friend owns 1 and is his daily driver with no issues at all

Be aware that the older models use evo 3 engines and have a few issues with gearbox and suspension

Good advice from Tom there.

I find it amusing sometimes when owners claim BHP that is obviously not achievable unless serious mods are in place and when you ask if they have a printout they always say the same thing:

"I have had loads of turbo's in the past and this is at least 300 BHP"

"I have had a fair few and this is by far the best/fastest"

My mates is pushing 300 and I run rings around him/keep up with him"

If it was me I would look at a airtrek as they are newer with evo 7 engine and GT-A transmition. A more versatile car with more seats and a better boot

And still 250bhp and 4wd and will still leave most other cars in ur dust

I'm looking at a few around the 2001 sort of age, anything older is just too leggy and covered in tat such as bullbars and those bloody awful N/S wing mirrors. I take it those will have a later engine?

Either way it sounds like the engine it's best left in standard fettle. It'll have enough for what I need it and when I get the urge to go faster I can drive something else. Probably the wrong place to ask this but I've always had the impression that Mitsubishis are a little more fragile than (say) Hondas. When I bought the Mrs a CRV my mechanic said "I suppose we'l be seeing you once a year for an MOT then". Am I wrong?

It all depends on how you drive and on keeping on top of the service intervals.

Evo's are totally different cars compared to the Honda's.

The nearest comparison that can be made to the CRV is probably the Shogun Pinin which is just as good and reviews are similar.

Highly tuned Honda's are in Garages just as much as Evo's.

Don't get me wrong if ur buying an evo then expect to use ur cheque book alot but as for the rest of the models don't think u can knock them mate

Honda's are very reliable cars mate and would say that ur mechanic is bang on the money but

Yea cos at the end of the day if it's high performance then it is bound to have the odd niggle from time to time

Oh trust me, I know a little about the costs of keeping a tuned car running. So does my bank manager. Try keeping a 430bhp Tuscan without the missus seeing the bills :whistling: Actually, it's not that bad. Nothing like the pub expert horror stories, this one has never let me down in three years and 20,000 miles. It's a two seater which is why I need something with more seats (and ground clearance). "Look luv, the RVR has four seats. That's DOUBLE!". It might work.

The Airtrek looks interesting but just above budget. Well, based upon the one and only example I can find for sale at the moment (£5500). More homework needed there I think.
