Another tapping sound on EVO

I've had quite a few EVO's already, and ofcourse also i know the many horror-scenario's about cranks walking out and roller damages.

The funny thing is, normally i do not notice it, but, at this moment i have two similar EVO 4's standing exactly next to each other. And, now i cán hear a difference.

Thing is, there's one i would like for myself (silver one) and the other is for sale here (white one)

This is what i notice. White one has very silent Fujitsubo exhaust. Exhaust is tight and has no holes or rotten. Engine runs smooth, without any weird sounds. Just runst a little like a Honda, maybe you know what i mean.

Second one, silver one, has a loud 5-zigen exhaust. Engine runs ok, no oil usage, no smoke, but it has a little tapping sound. When revving above 2500 rpm about it seems gone, below it is there. You just here the engine run very good, thats the best way to describe. But also, i hear some 'poofs' during stationary running. ust once in a while it seems to half-misfire. But, i must not that the loud exhaust has a hole in rear silencer and is quite bad after the downpipe, i do not know if it is rotten really through. I must say, that the other evo also has this a bit, you just do not hear it because of the silencer

Long story, anybody see something they recognize?

Thanks to all!

Well, you can hear it on idle, up to max 2500 revs, then it seems gone.

But it does not sound, unhealthy, but it is quite a typical sound.. I think big ends would make a lot more noise. It is just when you realy notice it, you will hear the tapping on idle. bit like.. tok tok tok tok tok etc. But, not in the way of rod nocking, just very light. You could imagine it belongs to the engine, but, i find it just to 'present'.

mine was very light but i noticed it as i had just thrashed it up the road and as i slowed i could hear a faint tapping that was'nt there before. tbh i would'nt touch it if it was tapping end off. i would'nt risk it. if i were in your shoes and it had to be a iv. i would get one with a later engine in. and save yourself the worry of the dreaded crankwalk cos its gonna happen sooner or later the iv engine is renound for it!!
but thats just my opinion. wait to see what one off the pros say.....

new oil stop mine from tapping,5 40 fully!so i no its the top end tappet's? I hope? Coming up to 2k now with that oil and its starting to come back, p.s if u dont look after a 4 engine it will walk, even the looked after one's walk! I think its luck of the draw. Plus a lot will run fine up to the day the crank hit's the crank sensar. Best thing would be to change the bearing's thrust etc, and put a mod it the thust face to help oil get in there or stay in there while your foot is on the clutch, its all the fun of having a e4.

Well thanks again for all the answers.

I dont know for sure, but it is quite a typical sound. It does realy not sound like anything bad, and i can say i have heard lots of engines in my time as a car seller. It is not a weird noise for a Japanese engine i think, but ofcourse the horrorstories i hear as well, although ive had 5 EVO's here in total and have never had any bad damages.

What would be typical Lash adjusters / tappets on a EVO4 according to the pro's here? If it was a honda, i'd say that was it..

I suspect that it may be the lash adjusters.

Give the car an oil change using 10w40 and see if it clears up.

If it is still the same after the oil change then you will need to remove the lash adjusters and inspect them all one by one to ensure they are lifting.
