An eventful start to evo ownership, boost leak?

Hi all

Well it's been an eventful start :razz: cracked manifold now repaired but a new problem has risen!

Driving the car today and covered around 100 miles. Car was faultless, pulling hard through the gears :awesome:

Then a few miles from home I go full boost in 2nd 3rd and into 4th I feel the power drop off drastically just as I was about to back off

Now the car won't register any positive boost on the AVC-R think the best I got it too was -150

So my questions, is this a blown boost pipe or something else? Do the actuators break and do this? Like the waste gate is wide open? iv had boost leaks before and not really had one where I couldnt make positive boost:shock:

I can't hear any strange noises and can hear the turbo still trying to spin up. I can also still make the SSQV make a dumping noise, not the normal noise though lol. The car still drives totally fine just isn't making boost, no dodgy idle or smoke etc

Iv read a lot of threads that never came to a conclusion so I'm hoping to get some ideas, fix the problem and post it up on here for people in the future.

When I get a chance I'll do a boost leak test, but it won't be till sat when I have time. So hoping for at least some reassurance so I can sleep before Saturday :blush:

You will know if you have blown a boost pipe trust me. A dodgy solenoid would make you register actuator pressure, possibly the bov. A leak test will need to be done in all honesty. Not registering any boost at all is strange. Your bov will sound different as its not releasing the same amount of boost but the fact it's letting some out says you have some boost. Plum the j pipe straight to the actuator and see how it runs...... If it runs better you can start narrowing down prob from there

only way you'll know what happened is to do the boost leak really, although if its not making any boost what so every it has to either be a very big boost leak (but would then assume it would run rough due to the measured air flow through the MAF and the difference to what the engine actual sees) or the actuator/waste gate pen is broke and not holding closed so the air is passing straight though and stopping it from making boost. It should be easy to test this by pulling on the actuator arm and see if it closes again

I did some research late last night and found a post about a guy with a X with the same problem! Turned out he had managed to blow off an important vacuum pipe on the throttle body. Once off the engine runs very lean and the ECU then cuts all boost :shock:. Not really sure what its for, but on my friends scooby we had a similar problem that turned out to be the vacuum pipe for the FPR.

Any way, its quite common as mappers pull this pipe off and use the it to take measurements during mapping. Thing is, once this pipe is removed it never really goes back on the same, due to age or heat affecting the rubber.

So my advice is chuck a small tie wrap round it, even if youve had no problems. Saves you having a night of worries like me :razz:

So this morning i got up ready to find the hose, in the back of my mind im thinking "No way will i be this lucky, and find an easy fix"

I find this, can you spot it? right in the middle of the pic, the hose has blown off!

So went on to put it back in place and added a tie wrap (i trimmed it after the pic, need a black one too :razz: )

And a quick pic of the bay and its location (red circle, yellow arrow)

I just hope this helps someone out someday, and i think its maybe a first port of call over boost leak tests etc etc as its very easy to fix/rule out, then go for the above advise.

So its back to evo ownership for me.

Glad u found the problem mate, I have had no end with those fiddly little pipes so I replaced all of mine a while back with red ones

Might do the same bud, a mix of red and black pipes for me or it may get a bit crowded in my bay.

The guy I read about. He was having a spirited drive pulled up to a set of traffic lights all fine, then pulled away with no boost! I guess it just slides its way off very slowly.

I know the feeling mate. I had a similar experience with a pipe corroding and breaking so I couldn't even really drive it! Managed to get it to mates garage doing 30mph but in 6th gear! what a nightmare. I had to keep pulling over to let people past me going up hill lol Wouldn't go past 2500 rpm because it would just suck air in.

Once I got it sorted, them massive smile was back
