Hi, I am going to hopefully buy my first evo on Sunday, it is a evo 4 gsr. What problems should I look out for?

Also what tunning mods are good?

Cheers rob.

Hi bud, the engines are rubbish in the 4, they suffer from crank walk
Hopefully you will find one with a later engine fitted

As billy said but less harsh, some are good some are bad, a bit of pot luck really. Just know a later engine can easily be fitted.

The biggest problem is going for bigger wheels as the 4 is very limited on this. But they are good cars

Try and do some sharp fast corners in the test drive to check AYC etc. watch out for the collapsed seat bolster on the drivers side too.

Oh and rust will be the biggest factor check underneath it thoroughly.

Cheers, fills me confidence about buying it. I never have much luck with cars as it is. Is there anyway of knowing about the engine?

Really? All 4 engines are rubbish? Mines done over 120,000 miles, end float is still well within Mitsubishi spec, 155-160 psi on all 4 cylinders. It's been running 1.2 bar for at least 20,000 without being mapped. How is that rubbish?

Howdy.

Yeah it's pot luck with the 4 engines, some are good some are bad.

As mentioned, fitting 17 inch wheels to a 4 can be a pain without scuffing, the main reason I sold my 4. You would have to fit 205/40/17,s and that might still scuff depending on your suspension.
Keeping 16inch wheels is fine but if you want to fit brembos you will have to go to 17s.

Lets see a link to the car your looking at, it might be known in the evo community.

17's are fine if you don't want it too low. I run 235/40/17 without any rubbing and it's dropped 30mm. Rear arches are rolled and it does rub with a couple of people in the back.

Main thing to look out for on older evos is rot , many are bad around the rear chassis rails.
