Question for anyone who has had a car stolen

Hello,

Slightly random question for you on behalf of someone I know.

They (very) recently had their car stolen, as a result they've had a call from a company (supposedly working on behalf of the insurance company) asking them to send the keys, MOT, Service history, V5 Log Book and a photocopy of their drivers license. Basically everything they have that proves they (did) own the car.

Does this sound normal? My friend is nervous about doing this as if the stuff gets lost in transit OR the company is a hoax he has no proof that the car was his anymore.

It seems strange to me, I dont think my mate wants to lose everything on top of losing the car too.

To be honest best thing to do is speak with the insurance company and see what they say.

Also I would ring the Police. They deal with these things all the time and would probably easily be able to confirm if its standard protocol and validate the company for you.

Not sure why you would need to send originals though?

What they are asking for is pretty standard but check with your insurer to make sure the paperwork is going to the right company. You cannot be too careful these days.

Update: It would appear that this is legit, he had a letter from the insurance company confirming all the details of the company and a phonecall to the insurance company's call-centre also confirmed it was normal for them in these circumstances.

This happened to me around 3 times before. Its standard practice these days. Mostly done when they plan to pay out or when they have recovered the car and plan to dispose of it. Always good to check with ya insurer first though.
