Can somebody explain Hotside to me!

As per title. Can someone give me an idiots guide explaination. They say a little knowledge is dangerous!

I am considering a turbo upgrade (if there is enough cash in the pot when my other more pressing niggles sorted out!)

I think the standard turbo on my 2005 Evo 9 GT has a 9.5 hotside (that's a guess though!)

I have heard that performance can be improved just by upgrading to a 10.5 hotside.

Noob question, is 'hotside' part of the turbo itself or is it some form of pipework etc. Just need to understand if it's something else I need to consider.

FYI, am looking at a hybrid TT S209 turbo so not mega power but one that will sit nicely alongside existing internals without need to upgrade too much and would therefore sit in the 400-450bhp space.

9 turbo runs a 10.5 hotside and also has a bigger turbine housing. The hotside is part of the turbo that attaches to the turbo elbow.

With good stage 1 mods and a good map you'll see 400+ bhp

I think most 9's do run the 10.5 just wasnt sure about the imported 9 GT as I have read conflicting information.

However, if I replace the turbo with an aftermarket one then I guess the hotside is included with the turbo so that's all I needed to know

Fingers crossed I can get all my niggles sorted in December and get the car on the rollers

the tt s209 is a great turbo, been running one for a good while now and very reasonable price, you can get from tt direct which i do, or enginetuner deals with them and can give you all the data on them, also have a look at the tt s204 dont make as much power than the 209 but spools up very fast.. my old 204 with MR cams gave me 421bhp at fly

Search my model differences cos that should tell you which turbo you have. Your right there are I think 3 different turbos for an Evo IX. The mr one isn't that good. The 80 series is the best for producing and holding power. And then the gt turbo which has a titanium comp wheel which arnt as reliable as the others.

Thanks, I'll check but pretty sure mine is the titanium wheel one mentioned by Lee which is whay I am considering changing it

Up until now, the S204 was based on the Evo 9 turbo. Due to the lack of suitable used cores, we are now offering the S204 based on standard Evo 5 to 8 turbos on an exchange basis These turbos use machined covers for large comp wheels, and come ready to fit your standard location and fittings.
The Evo 9 turbo upgrade will be offered exchange on an Evo 9 turbo only, now known as the S209 .
