Hi all,
I am about to take the step into Evo ownership !!

Being from the tuning scene now for far too many years !! I have always wanted an Evo, but always decided on something different when it came to the crunch !
I’m looking for a weekend / track car and thought the best option would be an evo for the fun factor.

I have £10k for the car, for which I want a low mileage version with the most amount of tuning equipment attached !!
After reading loads could I ask for some help from the group:

1) The FQ 260, there are many which have been tuned to around 350 + but could you let me know if the 5 speed box is the worst option ? Is there much different from AYC to SAYC ?? Am I being stupid picking items which don’t really give much to the end driving experience ? Or is there a difference ?

2) Is it better to start with an 260, 300, 320 or 340 ? as there are some standard cars which are nice, but I was really looking for something which had already had some goodies on it ? so a standard 340 or a 260 tuned to 400 ?

3) Evo 8 or Evo 9 ?? I have seen some evo 8’s with the evo 9 interior, but what would you say the best model is ?? There is not much difference so I’ve read and I can get either for the money !!

Anything to look for apart from the service history ? is there any spots on the car which I need to pay attention too ?

I am viewing two cars today, one red evo 8 with 330 bhp, but it is super clean and the other another evo 8 with 421bhp but a little tatty for my liking, both have evo 9 interior and both started out as a FQ260.

Looking on autotrader there is a blue evo 9 340 which I could get also but a bit of a drive away to view !!

Please help with my questions as I am in a bit of a pickle and don’t want to buy a lemon !!

Track day people could you let me know what are the best days out, locations etc and I’ll see you there in a few weeks !!

Thanks guys and i look forward to meeting some of you soon !!

are you after a track car you might drive on the road or a road car you might take on track from time to time?

if your after a track car then i would start with a evo8 260 and mod from there. everything that makes it what it is from a fq300,320,340,360 etc you either don't need or will change anyway.

if you after a road car then look for as new/nice as possible with best service history etc as you would any normal car. and you 10k should get you a v.nice 8MR or just about an evo9.

I looked at two cars over the weekend,
one of them 421 BHP and the noise this thing made was like "brown pants & wet dreams in one" and this was before i got in it !!

The thing was blistering fast with anti-lag and all the bells and whistles on. The problem was the interior had red in it, which would have been fine – but did not go with the car at all !!
The car was nice in many ways, but also shabby in others which let it down in my book, I know I want to take it out on the track – but this will also be my run around so it has to look smart as well.

The red one was amazing, SO clean inside and out and even underneath !! but it lacked the power I wanted. on the dyno print out it had HP 261 and then in very small writing on the other side of the print out it stated 330bhp ??
so what’s the difference between HP & BHP on a dyno print out ?? I took it as 261 bhp ??

Anyway apart from having all the bodywork and the look, this was the car for me –or so i thought, so I did not buy it as I would be spending a fortune tuning this car up !!
I already have a Astra project going on which I still need to re-spray and new wheels for it for the wife, so I would rather not be spending more on another car just yet !
also why buy a tuned up car when you can buy a standard one with more power !! something did not seem right !

So after talking it though with some people I think I know what I want !!!

I am after an FQ340 or FW MR 340 (Evo 8 or really i'd like a 9)– from what I have read you get a few more options from Mitsubishi, like better suspension, a few HKS goodies !
my thinking was I might as well buy a standard 340 than a tuned up 260 for instance.

This way I know the car has been properly set up (not by some back garage) as the evo was intended, then after talking to a few tuners for about £1000 in the future will give me around 370-390 bhp, which is all I am really after.

So if anyone knows of any evo 8 or 9 FQ340 for £10k !! let me know !
I am determined to buy a good one – coming up to Christmas people need the money also, so I should be in with a chance !

Anyway back to Ebay - pistone heads - autotrader and other sites i should be checking ???

What about a import ?
Mitsubishi : EVO IX FQ 300 MR

It's been regularly serviced and just had a service done on 2/10/11 and one year MOT till October 2012 and road tax till May 2012. This is Finished in The Ultra Desirable Red colour With Recaro Leather/ Alcantara Sports Seats and has the top of range Michelin PS2 tyres. This exclusive edition has a sunroof, and is from the last range of Evo to be powered by the legendary 4G63 Engine providing staggering performance! The Standard Equipment is: Climate Control with airconditioner, Remote Control Central Door Locking With Cat 1 Alarm, 17" Alloy Wheels, Xenon Headlamps, Electric Windows and Mirrors, Dual Airbags, Super Active Centre Differential, Super Active Yaw Control, Rear Vortex Generator and MOMO SteeringWheel. A top of the range Alpine supplies the music and parrot bluetooth system and a Mitsubishi UK Alarm/Imobiliser is fitted too. This car has been extremely loved and looked after with no expense spared. It has never been on track and the condition of the car speaks for itself. This car has been personally looked after, and serviced by Steve Hill motorsport that is run by ex British rally cross champion and they will provide a full report on the car (upon request). I will be sad to let this car go as it is in pristine condition but baby forces sale.

Its not an FQ300 if its an import. Problem is, there are too many stupid people mis-selling their cars. Imports are slightly higher on insurance too.

i spoke with the guy,
he said he imported it and has had the car checked out by Mitsubishi to confirm it is an MR300 - it is not an FQ.

No mods but looks a clean enought base to start from for tuning ?
Its worth a look so i'll be view ing it this weekend, unless of course another one better comes along - maybe with a few more toys bolted to it !!

i'll keep looking !

Its not an anything '300', its an import MR. I'd want to see pics of the engine bay before i even entertained the idea of going to see it. Though the rest of the car looks clean!
