Evo4 with evo8 engine has very strange engine work

engine is from evo8 - working very unstable - seen on the video.

I though at first that are forking only 3 of 4 cylinders but are working all. acceleration is ok - unstable work is only when standing on idle. when driving - goes ok.

what could be the possible problem? MAF? o2 sensor? could be some kind of idle valve (if evo has one)? or could be some serious problem?

I know that diagnostics could tell the problem but i need to know at least guesses for now.

sounds like tappets need replacing.

what do you mean by unstable? are the revs going up and down, couldnt tell from the video

problem in only when idle. on the move seems fine

by unstable i mean that engine seems to want to turn off when idle

check the position on the idle screw or spark plugs

Have you changed anything and the problem has occured?
Does it idle very low on rpm?
Does it try to stall when you lift of the accelerator?
Does the idle hunt and not stay stable?
Has the battery been disconnected for any reason?

Many questions I know but answers will help narrow the search

You say it idles at 900 then tell me it hunts, which is it?

Battery disconnection normally meens idle needs resetting

If idle tries to die when you drop of accelerator it may be because you have a vent to atmosphere dump valve causing the issue

AYC lamp on means new pump or pressure switch = lots of ££££

is there much black smoke when driving on boost?


check all pipework for air leaks, spraying wd40 around all associated parts can be handy to spot leaks.

haven't noticed much smoke. and on idle when press gas pedal and release - no smoke.

btw i've noticed a bit of a smoke coming from one of the pipe. very very little but still.

no, i don't have proof that engine is from 8th. current owner says that.
could 8th engine cause some trouble in 4th model in future?

it idles on about 900 when you press gas and release it - it's trying to switch off the engine. and one time i saw it switched off the engine



AYC pump and pressure switch are that muchs expensive?
does it mean that it's better to change the whole ayc if i get it?


the thing i need to decide is that - do i need to buy that car or no. exactly 4th model i like most of all and they are not sold in my country. the current one is the only one for sale in my country.

so actually those two issues i am very concerned about.

Having a later 8 engine will not cause problems but will hold a higher price than the std 4 engine
Ayc problems will lower the asking price as it means something needs fixing ... lol

yes, you are right - I am from Riga, Latvia.

and we have LHD traffic and if i buy it i'll have to convert it to LHD

i see AYCs at ebay starting at 200gbp or i am missing something? pump is outside the dif, right?

there is no question to buying one with AYC on or other - there is only one for sale here. i thought also to buy one in the UK and bring to my home.

I really don't know how much these AYC pumps sell for. I guess £200 may be fair, but I would have thought they would cost a little more.

Speak with John@evobreakers on here, he may have some forsale and he is a decent guy.

i've bought evo4 that i was talking here about.

ayc lamp is on. found one from evo6 in my country for 240gbp with ayc ecu. but pump is outside the ayc?

on Monday will show car to guys that do evos repairs.

engine run's fantastic except that problem on the idle. some people said that it could be due to hks camshafts that i was told are there.
