DIY Knock / Det detection

Im one of these people who would sooner make something they pay over the odds for the same thing

I have been looking at several kits on the market and came across this DIY version

AutoSpeed - DIY Detonation Detection - Part 2

I think its a good idea apart from the fact i would mount the mic in a copper tube that can be bolted to the block


I have been looking for the above model but cant find it looks like its been superseded with this model

Would still be easy to mod like the above

You cant turn the volume up on a stethoscope and a stethoscope does not have a long enough lead and not only that little headphones are discrete when on the road

There is nothing wrong with it they are for mapping purposes

oh i thought u use them to diagnose noises and where they are coming from, i'll post em up now for you

Yeh you can use them for that as well but you will hear det before its registered.

If Lee had worn something like that at pod he would of heard the deting and would of saved his internals

I brought one of these

and these, and removed the microphone are replaced with the knock sensor wires

At least its not only me who likes to make things appose to buying them lol

So i take it use the merc knock sensor as the mic ?

yeah the knock sensor becomes the mic,
that doesn't look too bad, athough not sure you need the wireless part but i'm sure it'll work just as well

I have just orderd the hearing aid you ordered it will be fine to use a knock sensor of a pulsar wont it just so happen to have a good one in my tool box

It was an example to what they are for. You can get them on with helmet no different to listening to an Ipod

It's a bit extreme for daily use or a track day or something though. Sure I'd just be better off with a afr gauge as it's a bit more user friendly.
Ideal for mapping etc though

definately the afr gauge would be more suitable for most applications, as no one really wants to drive round with a set of det cans in all of the time, really only useable when tuning.

It takes a lot on concentration to listen to them properly

When I got my car mapped Todd said the engine light would be come on as a knock sensor

In around 300 cars that I've mapped of various specs I have never once had to mess around with the knock tables... Make of that what you will.
