Evo Reliability question

Hi everyone

Im looking to buy either a evo 7 or 8 next year dont mind which one both nice looking cars.

What i want to know is do they have strong engines and what are the common faults? do they come with either 5 speed or 6 speed gearbox? which one is stronger for around 400-450 bhp? I have a impreza sti at the moment i had to get the engine built. I want to buy a car thats reliable and not worry if the engine is going to go bang.

do they suffer engine failure like a subaru? Do they have to be mapped for 95 fuel thats the only available fuel in my town?

any car will go bang mate depends what mods u do and if there done correct also wear and tear so u cant say....oh evo engines are stronger than or more reliable than scoobys

what do u want to use it for for example race,road,sprint,track

all these will have a deciding factor on weather or not its reliable

f1 cars have prescision engineering and millions spent on there engines but they still go bang from time to time

If you want 450bhp mate then you'll have to do a rod job at least cos the standard rods are not up to that kind of power.

A standard 7 should see you at 360-380bhp after that you'll need cams and a different turbo. Try go for a car which has already had the rods changed cos it will save you money.

Evo 7 has a 5 speed which is rumered to be stronger than the 6 speed that you get in Evo 8&9

You can run 97 super unleaded but you'll need to drive real steady on it and get the mapping altered so you don't get knock and yea you'll loose powere if you do this

i was told that 7-9 have to drop back to a v 5speed gearbox to get better power from them by an expert:razz:

as long as serviced and looked after properly they are quality

as for power, i think that might be too much for road use, if using for a track car yeah, but its a lot of hassle to upgrade engine components for that sort of power and to be reliable

I run 500bhp on the road no problems

Steve swapping to a 5 speed has nothing to do with gaining power but is said to be stronger than a 6 speed. So better to replace the 6 with a 5 in a big power car

You can never have to many ponies for a road car. Standard power is very tame. I need to feel the power once in a while, the 270 in my IV isn't enough, but for a daily driver is fine, the 190 in my 1987 ERST is perfect, it hits hard and the power is there where ever the RPM range is. Town roads my RS is so much quciker than the Evo, but when it come to A roads etc the Evo wins hands down.

Found it, in the wrong place, will have to make a new one up in the summer as i have plans for it. new bumper and stanard black moulding back. plus im thinking of painting the chassis.
