IV now or play hard to get and wait for a VI

Hi,

I realise this is subjective but should I a MK IV now with a £4k budget, or wait a year have a £6k budget and go for a MK VI.

Most TV “experts “ I have seen quote the VI as the best model to have why is this. I am not worried about top speed or 0 to 60 times as Rolls Royce like to say they all have adequate power.

Why wait if you can have a nice evo now rather than later.

I've just reduced my evo IV for sale to £3700 which is a bloody bargain since it's in mint condition, only got 65k miles and 13 months MOT with no advisors

Get a V and be done with it buddy.

The VI is the most value for money model in the range but it all depends on what you have to spend.

Fantastic car, but I think I need to take notice of the majority of the advice and go for a V or VI, the possible crank creep issue with the 4 worries me.

Are high mileages on these engines OK I have seen a V with over 80,000 miles but the 4's I looked at had around 50,000.

personally i would hold out for one with lower mileage. i waited for a while for mine after i found the same problem as you... lots of high mileage cars frustrating i know.

but hey, see what others say about it as i am far from an "expert". lol

Good idea for novices like me as a bit more research shows it's a bit of a marmite issue, so it's hard to make a valued judgment.

I would also be interested to know if anyone has had the issue what was the solution and more importantly the cost of the solution as this could be factored into the purchase price.

Personally, I have seen quite a few ranging from the Evo I to the IV.

You will not have to look far as Ollie had to replace his engine recently as a result of End Float.

DomJ has a suspect engine failure due to End Float too.

I have stated many a time before and I will state it again right now:

Over the years, I have checked for it on many an engine, some have moved and some have not, of those that have moved, the majority are still running quite well even now.

A close friend who owns a III brought it round once for an exhaust change so at that time I checked it for him and found that it had minor movement.

Four years later, it is still running at 330 BHP, with no issues at all.

My old 4 engine had no signs of CW and that had done 70k.

One thing to watch out for on 5/6 they do seam to rust bad under the rear of the car.
There are many posts and horror stories on other forums where the cars look A1 on top but under its a different story.

If you do go for a 5/6 and find 1 you love get it up on a ramp and have a good look before you hand over any £££

My e4 currently has over 116000 miles some where in km about 25k, even so if you take that away it may well still have 105k or more,,

I have never since i have had it checked or had it checked for the crank etc,,

But the car has an xtensive service history,, And since i have had it(2 years & 2 months) i too have added to it quite abit,,,,

So touch wood its going strong and will continue to go and go and go,,

As mentioned, you wont find it on every car, buying an Evo is not like going to the shop and picking up any copy of 'CoD black ops' for example. just because it looks the same as anyother thing of the same 'item' it'll hide things not visable to the human eye while scanning over the car. Always check under the car as the first thing you do. the Japanese dont unseal their cars for their own market as they dont have saltly roads like us. make sure the engine is cold upon arrival. warm engines can hide many things. If its warm, walk away unless you ar confitant its a 'good buy'

Should of mentioned my fav. is the Evo V, but VI is the best money for re-sale value. Shares the same rep. as the Escort RS Cosworth and that 'Scooby' of the same era.

hi mate that 80,000 could be in kmh and not mph

and to be honest at 80k on a car thats from 1998 is damm good mate!

Understood but I'm spoilt, I've owned a 1987 car with 60,000 and a 1932 car with 50,000. Admittedly they took a bit of finding.

If you can spend more go for a later car (V or VI) and if you're keen to get your hands on one, go for a IV that's had an engine out of V onwards.
