TC-SST Packed up completely

Hi Guys

Hoping you can help me.

I've got a 2008 Evo X FQ300 TC-SST. Had it for coming on 3 years and I absolutely love the car, it's the best car I've ever owned. Up until this point it's been faultless as well (apart from an ABS sensor going last month but I've fixed that now)

Unfortunately this morning on the way to work I was driving along, relatively slowly and calmly in D (auto) when it suddenly had a bonkers moment and starting jumping up and down the gearbox and couldn't find any gear. It then lost all drive, and the MIL/CEL came on and on the multi display it said "check transmission" or such similar. I pulled over and stopped the engine immediately, gave it a minute and started again in case it was a sporadic error. This time, it immediately went to MIL/check transmission and would only give me first gear and would not change up at all. I managed to limp about 2miles to a safe place where I could leave the car (this was like 5am, nothing open etc.) and then came back to it later.

First thing I did was code read it and got these:

according to evoxservicemanuals.co.uk

P2809 - Clutch/shift solenoid 2 stuck open
P2733 - Clutch/shift solenoid 1 stuck open
P181E - Clutch 2 pressure low

I tried clearing the codes and then starting the engine again, still broken. You can feel the car urging forward (well trying) even when it's in park, so I think it's "stuck" in first gear.

It's taken all day (to 8pm) but I've finally got it recovered home (stupid AA, don't get me started on them, kept sending a bloke in a transit - "IT NEEDS A LOW LOADER" x4 conversations to people in call centres) and because someone had helpfully had taken the towing eye before i bought the car I had to drive it onto the low loader - which it did, after a fashion; but when we got home there was gearbox oil all over the truck's bed.

So - what now?

Dealer - not interested. All they will entertain is replacing the entire transmission assembly at a cost of £10k.

Auto Torque in Buckinghamshire were quite helpful on the phone, but the only options being a full strip and rebuild of my unit (£6k) or buy a 2nd hand one from them for £3k and hope that's OK.

Spoke to a guy in the US from Jackstransmissions.com and again, helpful and will rebuild the gearbox for US$ 2k, but shipping it over there would be a right headache. He said it sounds like the valve block/solenoids have packed up, part alone could be sourced but could be as much as US$2k and I'd still have to find someone over here to fit it and they need MUT3 to re-learn/re-teach the gear positions.

I'm absolutely gutted this has happened to my much beloved motor, but need to be realistic - can't sink masses of cash into it endlessly; still paying for the darn thing!!!

Can anyone help, shed some light; advise, or recommend anyone to speak to?

All suggestions received - thanks,
Steve

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your help - I've made a lot of phonecalls this week and it's not looking too desperate after all - Indigo GT and TRL looks like they can both help which is excellent. They can do a strip/rebuild for not-silly-money (£1k? depending on parts),or supply and fit a replacement for around the £2k mark

Just need to work out which one, at the moment it's probably looking like Indigo, only because I'm paying per mile to have the car shipped somewhere and they are about 100 closer.

Tomorrow I'll quickly have a look underneath and just check nothing stupidly obvious and then start getting some quotes to have the car uplifted.

Up until it rained there was a fair puddle of clear-looking gearbox oil underneath the car - not sure what that means. Hope the casing isn't split

I'll keep you all posted.

Luckily for me... there's a happy ending to this tale.

It would seem that the last time it was serviced (Main Mitsi dealer no less) They didn't put this back properly

It's the clip that secures the rubber hose onto the SST filter housing that goes to and from the oil cooler in the front bumper. They are a bit of a pig to get to and they just done a half-assed job of fitting it by the looks of it. One was half on and half off the pipe, the other was fitted way up along the pipe and not gripping the union. Therefore, the hose popped off and dumped all the fluid out of the box. Could have happened any time though - it was a ticking time bomb!

Bit annoying really, but at least it was a simple and cheap fix - happy about that.

I also found a way around paying the Mitsi dealer stupid amounts of money for the Diaqueen SSTF-1 fluid (£160 per gallon?) - if you look up the oil spec you will find it's made by Castrol and is actually the same oil specified by Ford for their DCT powershift transmission, and by VAG for their DSG boxes. GSF (German Swedish French) stock it for £10/litre. And the best bit, is on the back, it has a big list of all the manufacturer's codes, and Mitsubishi DiaQueen SSTF-1 is on there :)

Happy end to the tale...

Additional - how can you tell when the fluid is at the correct level? For obvious reasons I don't quite know how much I've lost so topping it up is a bit of trial and error.

I put in 2 litres and it drove OK-ish up and down my street but the clutches were taking longer than usual to engage and it still had a fault code. I put in an extra litre (3 total) and now it's fine and the fault code has cleared.

Even if you drained it completely, you still get 2-odd litres lurking around in the u-bends of the cooler etc. So how do you know??

A good example of why most Evo owners do not use main dealers for any work on their cars. I am sure you could have avoided all this inconvenience and worry by using an independant Evo specialist.
