Recently sold my Toyota Supra and was looking into Evo 4's just wanted some info on the car itself,

Reliability
Performance
Engine issues

Anything bad about these cars? Just testing the water at the moment, as I have always liked the look of them :)

Thanks in advance.

welcome aboard alot of parts are similar to the 5/6 evos as with cars of this age check for rust
especially around rear sub frame mounts, heard of issues with crank walk on these
aswell

I've read about the crank walk, would it be better to buy an Evo 5/6 maybe??

Yeah I do like the look of the 4, and the 5/6 to be honest, the newer ones not so much, just did an insurance quote and it was hugely high! Think I'll give them a miss if I can't get cheaper insurance, they wanted £3500!!

depends on your age and postcode im afraid all 4/5 are grey imports so they are more
expensive to insure.some 6's are uk registered from new and are cheaper try the specialists they are cheaper aswell

25 and in a good area , I'll have a shop around, a Toyota supra turbo was only £500 a year, so I didn't think there would be much difference

if you like the 4's i wouldn't be put off by crank walk, there are plenty of 4's about with later engines in,also crank walk doesn't happen to them all and it doesn't happen over night either,it's quite a slow process my car had it already when i bought it,i wasn't aware of it so i didn't check the crank, mine had 1.5mm of play and a snapped balance shaft belt and drove prefect with mixed 135k on the clock,if mine hadn't been so bad i would have just checked the end float every so often, once it becomes out of tolerance swap the bearings out it's a pretty easy job to do.

Hi,
Please feel free to give us a try for insurance if you like. If you wanted to Private Message me some contact details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.
Regards,
Dan.

Bloody he'll who gave the quote Dick Turpin? After picking up a 4 and never having driven a car withbthis power on his own insurance he has taken out cover through kwikfit for £460 that's at 33yr old.
These companies just take the piss then never pay what they should if your in a prang.

There are more downsides to a 4 than just possible crank walk compared to later models.
The brakes are a lot poorer than the later Brembos, good discs and pads could be enough for just the road but still way off bigger brakes with the same set up.
If you do fit Brembos or better brakes you will need bigger wheels to go over them, the bigger wheels will give you fitment issues.
If you can stop the wheels rubbing with either arch work or rock hard coil overs and rubber band profile tires the 4 still has a narrower track than a 5/6 so doesn't handle as well.

will the brembo's go under 17's? think mine are 7.5j et35 iv'e got some brembo's berried in the shed, there isn't much that can't be changed to match the later cars but not everyone is buying there cars to race with anyway,so from a buying point of view if you prefer the look of the 4 it's not really a downside, mine is for my pleasure only and i'm really not bothered if my car was slower by 0.01 seconds in a lap time,i doubt the difference in the 4 5 6 would be much in handling would probably be more difference in the driver,i would say nearly all evo's are modified anyway so sets are all different someone mite have setup there 4 for handling some mite have huge power there's plenty out there.

The one I drove had std. 5 wheels over Brembos with 205/?? tyres, Tein Monoflex that were solid and it still rubbed terribly.
That was on a track but it would have been just as bad on the road if pushed.
You are right its not all about 0.01S its about the feel and feedback you get for the whole drive, track or road.
Have you tried a later one madhillbilly17 ?
It may be just me or the actual 4 I drove but it never felt as sharp as the later ones I have driven.

mite have been the one you drove,iv'e drove a few cars in the past that have rub straight away that doesn't feel nice probably wasn't setup very well,No haven't drove a later evo but was well impressed with how mine handles, ive got 205/40/17 std suspension and there's no rubbing,i guess they all come with strut braces front and back and a lower H frame? that's all i have and it feels great, just wouldn't be something i would have thought could be said as a downside, don't get me wrong if you can afford a newer model and like the look of the model you choose happy days, but some people like the 4's style or can't afford anything more,5s and up are over 5k i bought my 4 as a fixer upper for £1800.

The OP is considering a 4,5 or 6 so it would be wrong to say that a 4 was as good as the later ones, whatever his budget may be
A 4 is a great car for the price but the later models are even better, just at a higher price :)

what im saying is I think it would be wrong to say the handling was a downside to the car,the op over a year ago was looking into a 4 as he liked the look of them till he was put off, then said maybe a 5 or 6 then, the changes you say make the 5 6 better are small and wouldn't take much to change if you really wanted to,like i said before you would be hard pushed to find a std 4 anyway and you can buy one already done that would match a 5 6 spec,so it wouldn't be right to say the 4 wouldn't be as good a choice.

had my 4 now 2 years
same engine 140 on the clock an going like clockwork

brakes are ok for the power but better discs, pads an fluid should be bought if not buy brembo's, £300 for calipers, all thats needed is to trim the backing plates and they will then fit, but 16" wheels are a no go so 17"+ alloys needed

im still on my std brakes an no problems so far, fun cars
