Newbie needing help

Hi Guys, ive just joined this forum.
Im currently looking to buy an evo6. Im going to look at one tonight ive had my eve on for a while. I do however need some advice and hoiping therell be some knowledge around here that wont mind helping out.
The car is a 'T' Evo 6 with its power output of 400.1 bhp on a RR printout, the guy told me yesterday that he has heard a grinding noise from the back end so after looking into it he got told it will be the AYC pump needing to be bled and looked at. He took it to a specialist in preston yesterday and they topped up, checked and bled the AYC and when he left it still done it so apparently hes been told itll be the rear diff and it needs changing. The guy seems really honest and genuine and also know a few people through friends of friends who say hes a good lad so i think hes being open about it all, hes offered to knock £500 off the car for me so i can get the diff replaced.I should also mention it has an Evo8 rear diff that is apparently stronger?
The questions are
1. Is this all it can be from what ive said, the diff?
2. Is £500 going to cover the full cost of buying, paying to be fitted, jod done and dusted?
3. If the diff does give way completely (still driveable just noisy) is there anything else that it can cause damage to or already likely to of damaged?
4. If you can give me any advice on this issue or anything else you might think i need to know then fire away

Sorry i should also add that a mechanic friend (allthough he said not much experience with Evo's) said that with systems like the AYC on other cars sometimes you need to have new parts coded to the car electrically, is this the case or is it just a case of buy, fit, drive?

Hello again, do you know if the noise changes when cornering compared to driving straight?
The diffs don't have any electronics in them, the ACD/AYC system is controlled via the pump and solenoids, and I they just require a 12 volt signal to operate and can be changed without needing to be coded to the car etc.
In terms of cost I have no Idea really, where abouts are you based?

Hi Andy, Im going to see the car in about an hour so il know more later on but from what hes said the noise isn't there when driving slow whether its straight or cornering but if you corner hard then the noise comes from the rear like a grinding groaning noise i think he described it as. Yeah ive found out today that what he meant was once its fitted it should be bled with software instead of manually, im struggling to get to grips on whats right and wrong to be honest, ive had specialists from over the country tell me that its fine to manually bleed it after fitting but then most say allthough you might get away with it its not the right way to do it its should be done using electronics because of valves opening inside and things. Just waiting to hear back off a friend who MAY be able to get hold of whatever it is that does this.

Childwall area, but we have a Unit in Speke, yep it does sound like the diff, you had a look at how much they cost?
It's absolutely fine to bleed it manually once it has been fitted, I've done it and so have plenty of other people. Best way to do it is with the wheels off the ground and engine running because the car can decide itself when to open and close the solenoid valves. Sorry for the delay Andy6, Yeah mate i have had a look and for an Evo8 diff im looking about 400 so thats not too bad. Ive pretty much bought the car now, going on wednesday with my mate whos a mechanic and if he gives me the nod then il be taking it home. You might know about something else, only thing i noticed from driving it was the gearbox, it felt nice and solid through all the gears but it was REALLY hard to get into 1st, also once it was in gear and engaged you could move the gearstick a good half inch any direction, it didnt move when you were on and off the power so this didnt worry me too much just thought it worth mentioning with the 1st gear issue. Also was a VERY short throw, the owner said to his knowledge its not got a short shift kit or anything but it feels like thats whats on it..... after talking to a few people and the fact the clutch hasnt been replaced for a good 20K (Excedy hyper twin plate) we said it could just be the clutch coming up for renewing and its not engaging (/disengaging?) properly hence it being hard to get into 1st, any ideas mate?

Bit tricky to diagnose but does sound like the clutch and quite possibly the flywheel need replacing do you know if it is slipping? That being said Evo gearbox's are very sensitive to the oil that is put in them, do you know or can you find out what oil has been used in it? I put sh*t oil in mine once and putting it into gear and changing gear was difficult and felt horrible, worth a check before worrying about the clutch especially if it's not slipping. Did you check if it will go into any of the other gears whilst stationary? and also did you notice the car moving slightly as you put it into first? As for the throw I'm not really sure tbh but I wouldn't be concerned about it for the moment.

This is what's making me think the flywheel is worn, I've had similar issues.

Twin plate would have a new fly wheel to go with it unless it had already been serviced and the clutch actually had more miles than advertised....

Iv got a bleed box here...id bring it up for the cost of the fuel, andy6 mines still making noise! think iv bought a dud transfer box

Like a bearing whine....gets louder the quicker you go, but somtimes slowing down it goes louder again! Took my dad round the block in it and he seemed to think it was coming from the rear?? Need it back on the axel stands to listen properly

Andy, I picked the car up on monday. The clutch is not slipping at all pal, any gear, harsh acceleration, smoothly from low revs it didnt slip. When the engine is turned off it goes in and out of gear fine. I was taking the car straight to my friends garage anyway to have a few bits looked at before i drive it and when i got there i went to put it into revers and it just grinded, had to turn the car off, put into gear then turn it back on, even with the clutch fully pressed it was still moving backwards so the clutch definitely isnt engaging (or disengaging whichever way around it is) properly, hes going to try and adjust something, said with it not slipping it could be a few other things so should know by the weekend. fingers crossed!
I might not of made is as clear as i should, when i said a good 20k what i meant was thats the absolute MINUMUM the clutch ahs been on the car, that show many miles have been done by the previous owner and he hadnt changed the clutch it was previous to him, it could be upto 40-50-60 im unsure but it DEFINITELY wasnt in the last 20K. Hoping its just an adjustment anyway

AndyW really?! you have the software to do it? thatd be great that pal, when i change the diff itll be at a garage in chorley so if i paid your fuel and sorted you a few quid for the favour you wouldnt mind no?

Cool mate did you have a good one? Car is going great thanks I'm enjoying my first Evo, not what I'm used to but I'm liking it, makes you feel like you wanted to feel when you passed your test at 17 haha. Diff - it makes a creak now and then but it's now and then and it doesn't seem to effect the drive, AYC working fine so I'm going to leave the diff in at the min and see what it's like with fresh oil in it I think. The money I budgeted il put to the side and as soon as it gets any worse il get one put on but at the min for a creaking/groany sound every now and then I can't justify ripping it out! I've used the car over the last weekend (4 tanks of fuel worth of use haha) and it's not slipped once, my mechanic adjusted it and it feels 10 x better all though after a hard use it wouldn't go into reverse so it's back there now hoping we can get that extra adjustment and if not then I think he said he's gonna order a slave cylinder as he said the seals can start to give a bit over the years and for the price of them it'd be worth doing before spending out on a new clutch. Had plenty of work done in the week of owning it and it's getting better and better so looking forward to having the last bits nailed now. It's in at the min for a service just for piece of mind, was done 2k ago but thought it best to just get it done straight away and have a bit of confidence knowing it's done!

Yeah mate ill bring it up, its basically a box with wires coming out and switches on, connect it to 12v put pins in correct place and do as the instructions say....its easy with instructions ha ha just done mine, and again sorry for the late reply just come back from gran canaria

Cheers pal your a star, had the diff oil changed last week in the hope it would cure teh noise...... might aswell of whistled at it for the good its done lol..... but that dosnt need bleeding does it? When i get the new diff put in il 100% be calling on you for this. Thanks again

Ha ha think i need a rear diff aswell, went up warrington today to see a couple of specialists to see what my noise is.....
