Help me diagnose this engine sound...

no I used a telescopic magnet to remove all the bits. Cars getting oil changed and the sump cleaned out on monday now.

Were they ali or steel rivets? Can't see a telescopic magnet head fitting between compressed coil springs myself!

They were ali rivets. They are all accounted for though. I dont think anything has gone between the springs.

Yes!!

I've found the issue and fixed it straight away...

You wont believe what it was either...

Bloody rivets holding on the baffles inside the valve cover had give way, and one of the baffles got badly chewed up by the spinning cams.

I got all the shit out with a magnet... car now runs fine.

Will carryout an oil and filter change tomoz along with a oil cooler flush and I'll clean out the sump.

BTW, how do you propose to flush out the oil cooler?:thinking:

Don't know? might just buy a new one. Just bought that one though :sad:

Yes it has, I was unaware of that until I removed it, so the powder coaters will have re-riveted the baffles back in place. Maybe they were to small diameter?

I have also removed the other baffle.

Mate I'd get that cover acid dipped or just bin it.
Paint on the inside is a big no no. Mate of mine had the same on his Evo and cost him a engine after the paint lifted off blocking oil ways etc and starved the engine of oil which resulted in bearing failure.

I suspect the paint has shrunk back and so the rivets rattled out.

Just going on what I've seen happen before. You don't paint inside engines
And you don't paint on oily surfaces

fair point mate, but like I said I never knew it was painted on the inside??

I've just sold my other valve cover last month on MLR as well
