Slipping Clutch ???

Hi guys,

Im after finding out some opinions from you,

For the past few months my Evo 8 has been making a strange noise when setting off from a standstill and especially hill starts, and plus the car at the front has got a weird kind of rattle'ish noise, the ticking from the lash adjusters are adding to it aswel like.

Today i was on a hill at a junction and the car made the noise and then made a noise as if something was spinning, and i could feel it through the clutch pedal.

New clutch time for me. i need to get it into a Evo specialist and get the work done.

Try pulling away up hill in a higher gear.
I've not had that much experience with slipping clutches but my Subaru one years ago went with a puff of smoke when I was pushing it, It wasn't long after I changed it but I had to blip the throttle a bit to make it work right after that.
I had read about it somewhere and tried pulling away up hill in a higher gear, 3rd I think when I was test driving an Evo before and it just revved and nearly rolled backwards so I took it back

Right ok thanks ill try that then, so its should roll backwards then?

Not sure how bad yours is but I was having to give that car a stupid amount of revs to stop it from rolling back.
My Subaru wasn't nearly as bad but it needed far more revs than it had been/should have to get it going.
My Evo 5 has just had a new clutch, it was only slipping on the Dyno when mapping but other than the odd rattle, strange noise on track wasn't obvious that it was gone at the time, yours may just be at that stage just now.

Right cool stuff, well ill have a go at the hill thing and see what happens but TBH, i have to give it loads of revs when im in 1st trying to set off on a hill :cry:

Frankie- don't need a hill test. Drive along in 4th then floor the throttle. You'll notice the revs rise but have lack of acceleration in comparison

Lol yep some what of an expert on them :razz: haha I was gonna say the same but from my experience ( I'm on my 5th clutch !! ) starts in higher gears then as it gets worse it happens in the lower gears too lol.

But then my twin plate just crunched and made noises no fluctuation of the revs as a sign :sad:

That's because your twin plate fell apart. Wasn't due to wear lol

Nice one Rob - Any idea of a speed i should should be doing before i floor it

The guy i bought it off said it had a twin plate fitted, as when i got the car it was like it was on or off, so i need to get it out and see whats what really.

It would normally show on peak torque around 4k rpm
Not sure on speed!!

You can check through the inspection hole for a twin plate. It should be pretty obvious

well what gear then 3rd?? tbh it pulls quite well as i tried it today now that i think back. :thinking:

Slipping clutch would indicate wear.
Damaged clutch wouldn't show many signs till it just fails completely
