Hi guys n girls.

I've just joined the site as i'm hoping a few of you might be able to help me out with some of your knowledge and advice...

I have seen a Tommi Makenen evo 6 for sale with 50k miles on the clock. It looks very nice and clean. recently had the major service including the cam belt. Apart from an air filter and some 18" wheels it is standard. I'm very tempted....

But.

Mitsubishi Evo's are brand new teritory for me. At the moment i own a BMW e36 M3 Evo which has been tuned up a bit and is running around 340bhp.
My questions are this...

1. Can i expect the Mitsubishi Evo to be faster and more exciting? I would hate to switch and be a bit disapointed.

2. As standard the Mitsubishi is 280bhp, so my BMW has more power. However i know that the Mitsu is far easier to get some great power gains. What would you recommend as the first few vital upgrades to get good bhp gains?

3. What really importantvthings should i look for when buying a new Mitsu Evo (other than the usual things that apply to all cars)? For example i've been told the clutches are a usual 'problem' area to watch out for....?

4. There is another Mitsubishi Evo that i have seen which is 5 years older and about 68k on the clock. However it has the attractive feature of being tuned up to around 500bhp already... It would cost another 3k. Which would you buy and why?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm pretty happy with the M3 Evo. It's good fun, handles very well and it's in amazing condition. But i do still miss the fun of a turbo'd car (i used to own a Nissan Sylvia s14a running around 350bhp). I've always loved the look of the evo 6 and it has been on my wish list for years now. But i don't want to make a mistake if i can help it. So your advice could help me out a lot....

Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me a bit of guidance....

The usual car things apply. Clutch issue's are no different for any other car running more than std power.
The 6 has a recall for rear upper suspension arms.
There is a buying guide somewhere on here and a stage 1 upgrades guide.

If you're worried about speed, don't be. My 312bhp tme was faster than 2 e92 m3's around snetteeton.

For circa £2-400 you can have 350-370bhp very easily. Most Evos dyno in at around 300 rather than 280bhp so there's a gain straight away.

Thanks for the reply Tom! That's the type of info i was hoping for. Can you really get such huge bhp gains safely for circa £200 / £400 and more importantly... How? :))

Thanks!!! That's a really useful link! I think i'm pretty set on the idea of parting with my M3 Evo now and going for a Mitsu Evo. I feel like i've squeezed as much power out of my BMW as i can without having to spend silly money. Plus i miss all those pops, bangs and grin enducing noises that a turbo produces...
So i'm now torn between buying a mint 2001 standard Tommi Makenen and doing my own mods slowly but surely, or spending an extra £3k for a 1999 GSR with loads of mods including a forged engine running around 500bhp....
Hmmm......

Used to own a M3 Evo

Epic car I think a stripped out one would give a few cars a good run including lightly modified evos.

But get some bends involved, you can push an evo far harder in the real world.

Was the same deal with mine you can't add hardly anything power wise to them without thinking about a supercharger or turbo. The vanos got noisy on mine right before I sold it too :hm:

My 5 is another league though absolutely love it.

As for your choice, I'd be tempted at the tuned one more. It's something I wish I'd done. BUT you need to research into the work done. Find out who did it, are they reputable? Talk to the tuner and ask about the work done, etc etc

There's lots of cars out there that have "Forged" or "rebuilt" engines that have been done by numpties!

Get the adds up in the "evo chat" section so people can see and give advise

Oh and clutches aren't a usual thing at all no more so than any other performance car.

You'll have problems with a standard clutch if you launch it. Most Evos have upgraded clutches tho tbh. I have exedy twin plates in both our Evos and they're brilliant.

Speak to simon@nts on here about extracting a few more ponies, he'll tell you all you need to know!

Some good advice there. I bought my M3 Evo standard and did all of the work myself. The outcome is that i have spent some serious cash on her which i will obviously never get back when i sell her on. But it does mean that she is exactly how i wanted her to be..... It would have been far, far cheaper in the long run to have bought one that was already modified. But i can't imagine that i would have found one that would have been just how i wanted it..... That's kind of where i'm at with buying the perfect Evo..... I have found a pretty much standard model that looks exactly how i would like it to. I absolutely LOVE how it looks and wouldn't change anything cosmeticly. Then on the other hand for an extra £3k there's the 500bhp beast that sounds amazing. But it's older and doesn't look anywhere near as nice (cosmeticly that is).
My head says to go for the 500bhp beast as that will be so much fun. But my heart has fallen in love with how amazing the pretty standard one looks..... It's a tough one!

Another question (and forgive me if this has already been discussed in an old thread on here...).
Given the choice which release model of Evo 6 would YOU opt for? GSR, Tommi Makenen, Ralliart (RSX),or another model....?
Does it even matter after a car has had so many modifications anyway....?

If you want all out pace then an rs. A general all rounder id go for a gsr or if you want something a bit rarer then get a tme or rsx. A ralliart will generally be a gsr that was uk supplied.

Opt for the cleanest and within budget cars, don't set your heart on a model. Realistically they are all very similar and parts very swappable ie RS diff. :awesome:

A TME or an rs will hold better value in the long run :)
