Thinking of buying an Evo 4

Hi everyone,

I currently have a mk2 rev 3 mr2 turbo but I'm really liking the look of the evo 4. I'm very fussy with my cars so what sort of problems do I need to look for when buying an evo 4? Are there any common faults I should be looking for? Also, may sound like a daft question but do the rear seats fold down easily?

Sorry if these have been asked many times before! Thanks

Deb

Firstly a warm welcome to the forum,, And e4 is a nice choice of evo,,

im not a bing techno/mechanical junkie so cant 100% say what to look out for and what bad points are etc,,, (sorry)

I guess its like any other car u can go look at before buying,, Looking for service history/signs of rust/accident damage etc etc,,

As for the seats folding down,, NO they do not,, the back seat is static!

Im sure someone with more knowledge of cars and engines etc will be along to offer more advice,,

But good luck in your search for a nice 4:D

welcome to the forum.

i am also not so great with the tech side of things although i do believe there can be a problem with crank walk in the earlier 4...

im sure someone will be along soon to shed some more light.

good luck finding one though!!

Hi and welcome to our little Forum!!!

Another MR2 fan that has the itch;):D

I would have to advise you to go for the V as it is a better all round choice.

Kind of like the difference between the revision 2 and the 4 engine in the MR2.

Certain weaknesses were eliminated when the V was built.

It will cost a little more but well worth it it the end.

There is not too much to look out for when viewing an Evo as opposed to any other turbo car, they all have the same basic checks required.

You will need to check that all the lights in the speedo cluster light up when the key is turned and then go off completely and stay off when the car has started.

There is a more in depth check that can be done and I will supply the link when you are ready.

For now, I suggest that you peruse the site and familiarise yourself with the contents;)

hello and welcome a few things to check as being a v owner myself are

rust a few people have been caught out with this a car can look solid from the outside but bad things lurk underneath

ayc problems=car will make like donkey noises when turning corners at speed

actuater siezing depending on what one is fitted some of the later ones have a hat on so there ok but if its an earlier 1 they seize from the rain but cheap and easy fix

those are just a few things i encountered in owner shipbut let me tell you it doesnt put u off because once driven forever smitten thes cars are awesome

have u driven a 4/5/6 yet?

Thanks for all the responses guys, I really appreciate the input from people that already own these cars. I do really like the evo V but my max budget is around £4500 and from what I've seen I should get a nice 4 for the money. I do love my mr2 but I think it's time for a change. I had a mazda rx7 before that which I loved (when it worked!) but I've always loved the look of the evos so think it's time to give it a try :)
I've not had the chance to drive one yet but I've really only just decided that i'm going to go for it. I'll see what V's are out there for the money as I do really like them...watch this space!

honestly if ur looking a 5 for that budget,, You will be looking at the lower end of the 5's ie cr@p ones,,,

Maybe there are ones to be had,,, But not decent ones for that budget,,

And you should find yourself a very nice 4 for that money,, Don't let people put u off by saying go for a 5/6,, Because of the engine etc being better(aparrently) lol

If you like the look of the 4 which i love and the reason i have a 4,, Then pal you go for it :)

if u have a budget of 4,500 u can surely wait a little longer and find another 500 that will see u into a v i paid 5k for mine it was a bit of a dog but ive spent 3k on it over a period of time and now its a nice evo v :)

Hi and welcome. If you can wait a bit, go for a V like Steve has said or you could go for a 4 that has had a replacement later enigne

Yeh, but sods law, my favourite two have been moved to the MORE section and I was really hoping that there would be a machine gunner one that I could use to blast all the spam and con merchants etc:mad:

Never mind, maybe next year:D

Hi and Welcome to the forum - Go for a 5 if you have the extra cast or if you do go for a 4, just make sure the engine has a 5 upwards in it, as the four do suffer from crank walk. I had the same problem and know I have an evo 6 engine in the car.

Good Luck!!!

Helo,

I have an evo 4, and being female went to the import garage completely numb minded of everything! However the evo 4 is stunning and I have had my one for about 7 months now. As someone said though on here the crank system is meant to be weak. I have just had to replace my crank shaft pulley a couple of days ago as the pulley snapped in half - But like always a solve to broken parts is getting racing lightweight parts - So i got a lightweight pulley which supposedly adds on an extra 7-9 bhp.
So any problem you have with your evo there is always a posative side to fixing it!

Except this crank pulley I have had no issues with my evo 4 since having it- everything has been run smooth, driven hard and still in tact! xx

As the guys said you should look out for a mint Evo 4 which has a 5 or 6 engine fitted and maybe even a brembo conversion cos the standard Evo 4 brakes are cat.over here in Ireland you could find a mint 4 with
above spec for €4000 and a good Evo 5 for 5 to €6000.
