Hi Guys,

I'm having some weird noises when my car is idling.

its like a ticking and popping noise.

weirdly it only happens when its stationary, when I'm driving it doesn't seem to happen.

Only thing that's happened recently was a auxiliary belt change and a service

any ideas?

Model??
Mileage??
Does it happen under load?
You say stationary and not while driving... doe's it happen while stationary but holding the revs up?
Where abouts in vthe engine bay is noise coming from?

I'd say lifters/tappets. With crap oil...
Which oil did you service with?

Evo 8 260
34500 miles

It happens under load but not when it's being driven.
I'm not sure what oil was used but I has it serviced at Mitsubishi.
Surly they'd use good stuff?

What sort of revs is it happening? Was the car driving fine with no power loss?

It's most noticeable at idle but also happened when I revved it at around 3k.

It drives fine with no power loss

Hmmm I had a tapping about 3k while stationary but if I increased revs slowly I could go right past 3k and not hear anything. But also sometimes while driving, but I had power loss, because the knock sensor retarded timing, turned out to be big end bearing fail. Hope it's not the case but we went through every eventuality. Was caused by oil surge

It was something like that, they threw it in so hey i can't complain.

They've honored it so far.

Drop off the car next wed.

I would dig out the paperwork if I was you and have a look, we have a driver that's just got his car back and the probs he had with an aa warranty like labour rates, what's covered ect

I've already given it a check, but the works free as long as its done by them.
If i took it to another garage they cover up to £50p/h

Up to a max of £2k, but they said all i have to do is split the claim. e.g. separate claim for gearbox and engine

Ah that's ok sounds good, just gotta find a garage that won't mind doing the work for the warranty company.

Aux belt tensioner

dingdingding

winner!

Looks like the people who changed my aux belt didn't tighten it properly, they left a pin in that loosens the belt for fitting.

air con was also a bit damaged and needed some lubricating to allow a clutch to move.
