Dodgy or not?

Have arranged to view a car on Saturday.

Spoke to the man on the phone and he said that the AYC light has just come on. He said that it does not affect the way it drives but if it is broken he will lower the price. He did say that it was fine whilst the weather was cold but now it has warmed up, it has come on. After speaking to him on the phone, it sounded like he doesn't know a lot about cars as I mentioned performing a compression test and he didn't know what that was, but it was ok as long as I know what I am doing.

Does this sound a bit odd to you?

The pump usually fails the other way around, ok when hot but starts to fail when cold. Anyway, if it is the pump you're looking at about £500 to get it fixed with a second hand pump, but it could also be an issue with the ABS. Depends on how much he is willing to lower the price and if you want to take the gamble. The other thing to consider is that he is an owner who gets warning lights on his dash but just ignores them....

I have seen a few about with the light on. In terms of money, how much is it worst case scenario to fix?

I will go and have a look anyway on Saturday but won't be going with cash in my pocket.

What I thought was odd was that he said if I can tell him it is broke then he will lower the price. He told me that they are about £500 to fix (Seems to know how much it is to fix but doesn't know if it is broken hmmmmm)

Worst case is you have to replace the AYC diff itself, you're probably talking about £1,000-£1500 for that? That's s/h parts. If something like that is terminally broken then you could also consider an RS conversion which replaces the AYC, but you're talking around £2000-£2500 for that depending on who supplies the kit and if you can get one. The most likely scenario is that it is just the pump, but you never know.

Find out what manifold is on it too, if its a cheap eBay one it will crack in no time. Not a reason not to buy, but look into putting a standard one back on, as the decent ones can cost £600+ :wtf:

£500 will be a rough price with 2nd hand pump £2500 is with a brand new pump.

Do some research on "failed AYC" or "AYC lights on" you'll get a good idea of the rough costs, then go and try and drop the price to cover the repair.

If you do buy it take I to a specialist recommended on here and go from there.

Well I might still go for a look. I know someone who is a specialist in terms of doing the work so I am covered there.

Is there anyway of telling that it is the pump or the diff or the gearbox itself?

When you start to push an evo you can feel the AYC working and I think it's awesome. I know mine would have been a lot harder to drive around track as fast as I did without it.

I'd also be put off straight away by the fact its a 5 being advertised as a 6!

I wouldnt cross it off the list, a second hand ayc pump can be as little as £250 and about 30 mins to replace.

Other way around when it gets hot more fail

Thinner oil, working harder. Etc etc

Just had a text from him saying that he won't let me do a compression test or even get someone he trusts to do it as it has already been done and came back perfect and I should believe him really.

It's off the list for good now!!!

I bought mine with the ayc and I got a low mile one on eBay for £200 and that was fine,sold it a few months ago because I blew up my rear diff so I changed to an RS setup
