Buying Guide Help?

Hi folks,

Just joined the forum. Currently driving a Focus ST3 but thinking of swapping to an Evo, wanted one for years just never taken the plunge.

Started this thread for help and advice on what to look out for when buying and looking over cars. I will be buying an Evo 7. I've been warned off 8's and 9's are a little out of my price range.

Any advice or pointers would be great.

I can afford an 8, everyone I know says to avoid 8's as they suffer from numerous problems?

7's like rust underneath, I have a 8MR and had no problems in 2 years
If you buy a good one you shouldn't have any problems buy a shit one you will have shit times sorting it out, what numerous problems you been told about?

I can't remember exactly. They were mechanics though. Friends. So not going to wind me up. Maybe it was about the diff? Are there any known common faults with 8's?

And I guess what you said is true of most things, buy cheap and expect problems ha.

AYC pump is the main problem if not serviced properly can cause problems.
But that is any evo 6/7/8/9/10 that can happen to

What kind of service history should I be asking about, I've heard about diff oil needs to changed every 4000 miles?

AYC Pump sounds familiar actually. I'm a bit of a notice mechanically wise, so tend to listen to mates who work in the business. They drive Scoobys n Skylines so they know their stuff. They all share the opinion of avoid 8s...

Avoid 8's lol, if they are saying avoid 8's best you listen to them as they drive scooby and skylines....I can't see why you avoid a 8 ? They will be more people to say the same as me...

Exactly why I came to join the forum. I just meant they drive performance cars so know a lot about them, they all said get either a 7 or 9. I'm not put off from buying an 8. I kind of joined here to be reassured from positive owners stories, tips on how do you pick a good one etc.

I'd like to know what they think the evo 8 is a AVOID?

As above I have a 8MR which is one of the best 8's and I'm over 400 bhp and had not one problem apart from wear and tear as you expect,

Service history is a must with using decent oils make sure the AYC has been serviced along with the box/transfer and rear diff has had oils changed then check your normal stuff like engine noises etc....

I'll ask tomorrow why they said I should avoid 8's so I can let you know.

Personally I'd kind of set my heart on an 8 so was disappointed to hear all my mates be like 'noooo stay away from 8s'.

I just wasn't sure what kind of questions to ask, why I always find it best to join an owners forum and hear it from the horses mouth so to speak.
