oil catch tanks on a evo , yes or no ?? :O)

hi guys

a lot of people run oil catch tanks on the breather systems on there evos " and other cars "


there seams to be a couple of routes to go down if fitting one ,



running a catch tank in line keeping the vacuum from the inlet manifold and having the tank fitted between the end of the rocker cover and turbo inlet pipe ,



and another doing away with the vacuum from rocker cover to inlet manifold and taking both breather pipes to a catch tank and then venting to atmosphere ,


or variations or both :O)



what i am wondering is what are your thoughts on these ?


is this worth doing to gain some free power " less hot oily air entering the inlet / turbo "


and what setups are you using :O)

I've just ordered one to try off eBay n I'll be fitting it how ever it says on the instructions :thinking: cos I ant got a clue what they do it just looks shiny :razz:

If its off ebay what make is it. As it probs wont have instruction like i found out. But its very easy to find a spot to fit and run the pipes.

i think a lot of people fit them because there shiny :O)

but im not one for show so if i fit one it will be out the way and painted black ;O)

seen a few evo's with -10 an-10 fitting welded on the rocker covers to allow for thicker breather to be fitted but will be nice to get some positive feedback on how they aranged the pipe work .

It's just one of those red anadized ones even if I don't plum it up it will look good in my bay,I'm a bit like a magpie :razz:

I think, if its between the rocker and intake then it just filters the air into intake. Or you could just run it down the side the block and out to atmosphere and blank off the intake.

I run proper -10 fittings on rocker cover. Both going to catch can then vent out the bottom to atmosphere.
The pcv removed and inlet mani blanked off.
Any benefits, well yea. I had dipstick blow out on track one day and couple times after that I was getting some smoke issues.
Spoke to a couple people and they said well, you need to let the engine breathe. I thought I was with large air filter and exhaust but no. That's not what they mean. A lot or turbo cars and some NA engines when ran at a large amount of high rpm use age like when on track will have a small amount of blow by at the rings. This causes crank case pressure so you need to let it out. The original breathers were fine for standard engine but as I'm over 500bhp the standard breathers can't keep up so open them up.
Fitted my can kit and problem solved

very true , as much as i like to find my own answers and come to my own conclusions i do prefer to learn from other peoples mistakes rather than my own :O)


do you have any up to date pics of yours installed ?? as ive had a look and can only find the pics of your parts pre fitted :

found a couple of bits of interesting reading , about increasing the crank case vacuum to improve power via a pump or with the use of a dry sump set up :O)

think its worth doing keeps the intake and air pipe/ turbo clear of burnt oil

I have a cusco catch can, t pieced the two vents to one side of the catch can, the outlet runs off down to the front bumper with a pipercross breather filter on the end of it.

worth while mod no matter what the power if you ask me. can see the c**p that collects in it..

That's a really nice install, running much the same but still on the stock breather outlets in the rocker cover.

it does look very smart .

i thought about using the stock rocker outlets but thought i would go with the an10 fitting as i believe they are around 15mm bore so will offer no restriction in the future if i decide to take my evo to the next level "not that i have any issue's at the moment but prevention is always better than a cure"


iv been given a tank and have ordered some an10 fittings to weld to the cam cover and for the hose ends .

will be running 2 seporate lines to the tank one from each and a third from the top of the tank to a remote breather / filer under the wing some where ,so there will be no fumes under the bonnet and the tank will still catch any oil .

the oe pipes will be removed and plugged ,

just need to wait for mr postie :O)

We have one on our 200sx it replaced the carbon canister which did free up a little bit more power tbh ,ours goes from the rocker cover to the breather of the turbo

used catch tank with 15mm fittings + filter off a mate " may get a bigger filter "

2x weld on an10 alloy bungs for the rocker cover
1x bolt through an10 fitting for catch tank breather
3x 90 an10 fittings for the hoses

just waiting on the hose and some welding and jobs a gooden :O)

That'll do
