Much like the cosworth head you can buy ;) they have proven gains just a massive price tag..

Cheers Phil. Think that it's only worth doing when looking to run some serious power and happy to part with a good bit of money for the privilege ;)

No worries mate and ams, cosworth etc are expensive for their heads but these are no different than what any engine tuner/reconditioning can do except ams, cosworth have a name but how many of them to their own in house engine tuning and reconditioning? ;) I did tell you to buy a used forged engine and the majority only head a head service and a set of piston rings but some have the bushed wore on the conrods so these need replacing at a cost of £210 but still a cheaper alternative than a fresh new build for you. :)

Yeah can see it all being much the same.. As for engines you did say about buying second hand and I did have a look but think for the time being I am going to have to hold off. Have to say that I did find a few at some decent money. going to try and sell on the head I have.. Hopefully without cams so I can drop them in and get the car mapped.

Take a look at this link for anyone who does not know that an E( has forged rods and pistons as standard.

Do you actually know what a forged rod and piston does look like?

Mitsubishi Evo (03-) MR FQ-400 4dr Saloon Review | Autocar

It is only the FQ-400 that was forged. It was built using arrow rods and omega pistons.

This was not the only Evo to have this over the years. The RS-450 also had this and a few other select models.

Forged rods and pistons though is not the norm.

As I thought. Cheers for clearing that up :)

Technically speaking evos are forged from the factory, forging is just a manufacturing process.

How much power and abuse they take is down to materials used, manufacturing process, quality control etc.

This is true but the context in which it has been used is misleading in this case. The term forged has become to mean "Built using aftermarket forged parts" over that past few years :)

How much extra hp could I get with some porting and these mythical 3 angel valve seats which I hear whispering about? Is it 30 to 60bhp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or 5-10 depending in spec!?! Lol!

Totally spec dependant. Usually a percentage gain of up to about 10 percent I believe

Depends whats cams you are running also abut 3 angle valve seats are very similar to going 1mm oversize but using standard valves. A little head work or a gas flow which you could do yourself. Standard head and cams usually between 7-10 percent gains, some head work and uprated cams usually show 12-25 percent gains.

Porting does help and i will offer anyone who thinks is does not make a difference to have their evo on the rollers and then send me your head for porting and go back to the rollers and if there is not an increase of at least 5% you do not have to pay for the porting.

Evo comes with 3-angle seats as standard. You need to find a good shop to make that better and some i've tested were worse than stock.

Just been asked to post on here by a trader who spotted a thread i just put on the other site

http://www.*******************/showthread.php?t=429709

Porting wise. Same again. Simply rubbing the casting off and polishing up is a waste of time. Reshaping the ports correctly can be a massive gain. If you just want it polished up take it to the local jewellers, they are much cheaper than head shops and it will be shinier:)
