Porting

Hi all..

Just been having a look at the replacement head I have for my car.. No one has bothered porting the exhaust ports even though so told it made good power. just wondering if I should look to go down that route.. And if yes, worth getting a "cheaper" stainless exhaust manifold to have ported as well?

Answers on a post card.. Maybe include places that can do it? Seen it done I just don't fancy doing it myself :razz:could well make a royal mess lol

I did inquire about it when my head was off last yea but was gonna cost a fair bit.
I recall the possible gains from it would be quite small due to the very good way that Mitsi made it in the first place.

More suited to 2.3 stroker engines really :)

Cheers Lee.. Won't be going down this route then. Just wanted to know but no point if there isn't much benefit from it

Rubbish as if you ask any mapper or head tuner they will tell you the significant gains to be had from porting a head. A fully forged engine with 3 angle valve seats and 264 cams went to be mapped with a GT30 turbo and produced 452 BHP at 1.7 Bar and 448 lb torque... the same engine had the head ported and skimmed and then went back to the rollers and produced 467 BHP with 492 lb Torque. Any 2.3 Stroker needs porting done to expel the gases faster from the head. It all depends on your turbo and spool. A stock turbo and head will benfit nothing from porting for the price of porting a head.

Does Cylinder Head Porting Contribute to Better Performance on a Trubo Charged Engine?

Which will fill a 5 gallon container the fastest?

A: A one inch water pipe at a pressure of 15 PSI, with a 1/2" restrictor at the outlet.
or
B: A one inch water pipe at a pressure of 15 PSI, with a 3/4" restrictor at the outlet.

If your answer is “A “you should not be giving nor have an opinion on porting cylinder heads on turbo charged engines.

If your answer is “B “then you will understand that all turbo charged engine will benefit drastically if cylinder head porting is done correctly.

Cylinder Head Porting or Port and Polish is the art form of modifying the intake and exhaust ports of an internal combustion engine to improve the quality and quantity of the air flow. Cylinder heads, as manufactured are not optimal due to design and manufacturing constraints. Porting the heads provides the finely detailed attention required to bring the engine to the highest level of efficiency by an increase in volumetric efficiency. More than any other single factor, porting technology is responsible for the high power output of modern engines.

This flow porting process can be applied to a race engine to optimize its power output as well as to a production engine to enhance its power output for daily use or to alter its power output characteristics to suit a particular application or to turn it into a racing engine.

Daily human experience with air gives the impression that air is light and nearly non-existent as we move slowly through it. An engine running at high speed experiences a totally different substance. In that context, air can be thought of as thick, sticky, elastic, gooey and heavy. Pumping it is a major problem for engines running at speed. Flow porting helps engines deal with this problem.

More boost equates to more induction heat and induction heat can equate to a multitude of problems therefore it should be the engine tuner or engine builder's main aim to make the highest level of horse power at the lowest level of boost.

Rubbish[ /QUOTE]

Cheers for that. But like you said, gains when running a gt30 yes, but the op is running a Mitsi turbo and Mitsi cams so do you really think he will benefit from chucking hundreds of pounds into head work

Also not to mention that dyno figures fluctuate :)

when i asked nr autosports and cpp about head porting for a 2ltr with gt30 they said don't waste your money as below 600bhp theres no gains
si norris said similar

in east sussex on a psvita :O)
i also read on another forum that porting under 5-600 bhp is not needed and if going to big on the ports , valves ect , can possibly slow down air speed in the head hurting power lower down the rev range? responce / cylinder filling ect .

as the mits head is already well over engineered for standard use ??

im never gonna spend £1000 + on a head to find this out my self tho :O)

i cant see a problem just cleaning up the rough casting mark's tho :O)

.

The thing to remember it is not about peak numbers if you had the porting work done but gained say 10bhp peak you may say it was not worth it.

If you then overlayed the graphs before and after and you had an average of 30bhp through the entire rev range extra I feel it is a worth while investment.

If have a custom head on my Evo X I will be testing on the stock turbo. The power gained will be interesting :)

Cheers all for the replies

Food for thought there..think the main one would be costs ;) trying to get the car done on a tight budget lol

Forget it then. My race engine builder mate that I've know for many years wanted over £600 to do mine for me. I left it as Mitsi intended it to be :)

And from what Iave seen they are not upto al that. If getting a P&P though make sure it has some data to back it up.

Porting ranges from £400 upwards. All heads that had been ported correctly will have the engine show gains overall from not having the head ported on any dyno or mapping graph. If building a fully forged engine with uprated valves and cam kit why would you not have the head ported? Speak to any reputable mapper and ask them the difference in gains on a head that has been ported and a standard head. The customer can have any work done they want on an engine build and it mostly depends on a persons budget which can also be catered for.

Much like the cosworth head you can buy ;) they have proven gains just a massive price tag..

Cheers Phil. Think that it's only worth doing when looking to run some serious power and happy to part with a good bit of money for the privilege ;)
