what engine size/output?
if its a 2.0 check to see if its had injector recall
these do suffer from a couple of issues mate
oil pumps fail on 140bhp chains snap and on 170bhp the drive gear/balance shaft fail
electric handbrake plays up could be switch or ecu also calipers can seize
you can get electrical issues but these are not so common
you can code in alot of functions on all ecus and a remap makes the world of difference

You got it in one! :)
The handbrake usually fails because you need to get the calipers pushed back using diagnostic machine.

Wish they had the injector recall when I did them on a 2005 reg sport model. Cost me £450 for 2 used injectors (£450 each new). About a year and half later the did a recall :(

Late 2007 onwards they improved the oil pump failure, but then the dpf failure kicked in!!

Give your local vw a call and they can check on their system to see if they've been replaced.
You got the 1.9 engine which is the better engine :)
