Car screwed

I have just got back from mk and the car started makin a funny rattling noise and revs dropping. I popped the bonnet and looked to see the air con pump smokin and the Lilly seemed to be rattling about instead of freely spinning. I turned the car off and after about a minute the smokin had nearly stopped and the heat from the pump had obviously melted through the aux belt so it pinged off.

I waited a few mins and limped the car off te main road temp started rising so turned it off,

My question is...... Do I have to replace the aircon pump and belt which I have never used the aircon since I have had the car as it never worked or is it possible to remove aircon and fit a smaller belt to run all other ancillaries

you need a allen key to lock the tensioner n place while you swap the belts..its either 6 or 8mm (cant remember) or a steel nail or thin stable rod.

Yh I called my dad and we could for the life of us work out which belt ran the water pump so he said try it of the temp rises switch off so it started movin up so I did just that. Thanks mate I'll check the link now

I just checked out the link, I know the engine is pretty much the same but I have an 8 and they are for 5,6 would this still be ok

the propper legal way would be to have a garage drain the system.

or locate the low pressure fitting, and stick a sparky screwdriver/pin etc in it to release the pressure..use eye protection and wear gloves ffs!

or undo a hose,then stand back and pull the hose off.. ac is under pressure..between 5 and 20 bar,so be very very carefull.

How did u manage that or did you just let the gas out lol, I dunno whether to remove it all together or just leave it there as its not causing any harm

You don't need to remove the pump. You can just fit the smaller rs belt which you can get from most motor factors that stock gates belts and just pop it on

remove the pump..done..there is already an idler pulley in place (the small pulley t the left of the aircon pump)

remove pump,lines,a/c cooler and save 15-20 kilograms in the process

i would remove the radiator before you start, you dont want to damage the raditor while removing the pump.. you can also ditch the A/C rad and A/C fan too

remove the splash shield and have a look, its easier than u think.

I think I'll leave it in place for the time being but thanks for your help raph. So the belt is readily available? So should be able to pick one up in a couple of days

Yep, my local motor factors stocks gates belts and Evo belts are always un the shelf.
Just buy the shorter of the 2 belts available

the ac pump prolly siezed causing your belt to break..you have to remove the pump at least.

There is no reason to remove the pump. If using the shorter belt it will just bypass the pulley. Just make sure you let the next owner know if you sell it.

To get the car running I'm just going to bypass it for now and next time I'm up at my dads I'll pull it all out in the workshop not summat I wanna do outside my house. Going to order the new belt in a lil while I'm not goin to get a chance to get to a motor factors until midweek

I have long plans for the car if I'm honest and I have had aircon in all my previous cars and tbh never used it apart from demisting windows lol, so won't be a loss to me at all

Yh that's the route I'll go down but will do it like I say next month in the workshop

Just be careful moving the car as the belt drives the alternator, power steering pump and water pump
