Weird noise on an evo 4 (crankwalk possibly?)

Hi all,

I have also posted this question on the MLR with only one reply!! Hopefully someone can shed some light on it :)

There is a weird noise from engine when the car is at 2000rpm. The car drives ok (sort of),have to rev a little higher when setting off!

When I press the clutch in, the revs seem to drop a little?

At a guess, I think it's the big ends but unsure.

I am going to get the car to a mechanic (who knows evos) and find out what the score is. This probably won't happen till the weekend when I see him because I don't really fancy driving the car or moving it about. w.

I'm sure one of you will know. I got one reply suggesting it is running on 3 cylinders.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like a cylinder may be down. I need a little more info to give a better answer though.

What kind of weird noise in it???

Does the noise go away when you dip the clutch???
Is it there when you start the car up or only at 2000 revs???

With the rev's changing when you press the clutch that sounds like crank walk.

Does the pedal feel a little strange? I.e. A bit of float at the top of the pedal?

need to hear the noise to be sure.
symptoms sound like a possible crankwalk or big ends beggining to knock.

I started the car up earlier with no funny noises or anything! I pushed the clutch in with no issues! Also revved the car to try and hear a noise but nothing! Weird.

The car struggled to go into gear for some reason (maybe clutch pedal needs adjusting as had an issue like this on a previous car, apparently a fault with after market clutches?).

Once the car was warm, I pushed the clutch in and the revs dropped slightly from 1100 to 800 and slowly climbed back to 1000 even while the clutch was in. Once release it's ok. I tried it a few times and it kept happening.

I have been revving the car and can hear the noise (like pinking). I would think big ends but it can't be as I revved the car from under the bonnet and the noise seemed like it was coming from the inlet manifold side towards the top i think.

The engine seemed like had a slight miss on idle but have come across many like this so not sure if it is missing or not?

When driving can hear the noise and seems worse on the inside of the car but the same as before when under the bonnet.

My gears for some reason cannot be selected for some reason (mainly 2, 4 and reverse. Seems like thers no slot, but if I keep messing manages to select but doesn't feel like it (dodgy linkage or something?).

At one point the overflow started chucking out lots of water like the car has overheated but temp needle was halfway. Put the heaters on and it's blowing nioce and hot air.

I'm so puzzled as to what it can be. The car has had an engine put in and I reckon some pipes have been mixed up or something and that's why the gears are playing up now (were perfect before). It has a pipe not connected to anything on the right side of the engine towards the back which I haven't seen before on an evo.

The engine cuts out sometimes if you don't rev it a little before setting off (meaning give it enough gas).

Could the timing be out? It is a little lumpy now when setting off but may boost ok but I didn't want to try it just incase I cause more problems.

I need to get it to a mechanic quick.

What you reckon the probs are guys? (wonder if any of you have ever come across anything like this before?

Regarding the issue when setting off and needing to give it more gas.....

Is this from a cold start or both hot and cold??? Mine is similar to what you are describing when I set off cold. All i am going to do is change plugs and leads on the next service (been recommended to do this) might be an idea to try that if they haven't been changed for a while (or if they have, have they been gapped correctly?)

As for the gearbox and the engine noise, have no suggestions for that I'm afraid.

As for the above, I could be way off the mark, but I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong :D

I was thinking of getting the leads and plugs changed. I might just swap the leads and coilpacks off one of the others just to see if it fixes the problem.

Not sure about cold. I tend to let them warm up a little before setting off.

I hope someone can advise. It's the weekend so peeps will be out, but hopefully will get a few replies Sunday.

You might as well give it a try buddy!

I will have a little think over it and get back to you tomorrow.

A quick compression test might be worth doing too;)

I wouldn't bother changing the coilpacks etc.

The fact the the rev's drop by 300rpm's when you press the clutch means either. The realise bearing is causing drag, or the thrust bearings.

I'd say its more likely to be the latter.

The best thing for you to do would be to get a pry bar and see if the bottom pulley moves in and out. I'd say you've probably got a mm or 2 of play at this point. :(

Thanks Ricky,

Will I need to remove any covers to get to the bottom pulley? I'm sure I don't need to but thought I'd ask :)

Probably need to move the dirt guards underneath and in the well arch. I'd take the front right wheel off.

Go steady what you lever it off it might crack the casings.
