New to evo's, can someone help?

At the moment I have a Stage 3 Corsa VXR, I was looking into getting a turbo conversion and taking it to 390 bhp. However, I am thinking that it may well be better to save this money and buy myself an Evo. I am looking to tune it and use it as an occasional use car and track day car. I was looking at the Evo 8 mr, I like the shape of the 8 and 9. Going by what I intend for the car, can someone please help me and advise which model Evo I would be best to buy.

all evo models are quite easy to tune to 400bhp and 400lbft, there are a few threads on whats needed but usually its a fuel pump, decat exhaust, filter and remap. if you want to go higher then you'll need to do the internals.

It all depends on how much ££££££ you want to part with

I would probably take it further than 400bhp.

I was looking around the 10K mark. But wondered whether to buy a cheaper one if I'm gonna play with it or to shell out more and get something like an fq400.

Convert the Corsa to 390bhp it should eighther go bang or understeer into a tree. Eighther way it gets another vauxhall off the road!



By the Evo & buy the best one you can for the money you have. The better model will alway's get the extra when selling on. Modded MR's still fetch very good money. Or i should say are for sale at very good money. The MR FQ400 in std form feels very slow & you will want to at least change the turbo & have it re mapped. For a good one expect to pay around £18k. Its a buyers market at the mo so just look around.

FQ400s are hard to come buy and will carry a premium on the price.

I suggest looking at either an 8 or 9 FQ340 or FQ360 and then tune it.

As said 400 can be acieved with fuel pump, exhaust, induction and remap.

After that you looking at rod conversion for about 2K and uprated turbo.

It will be more expensive than the corsa to mod but will handle the power much better.

I couldnt get my old cupra k1 with WALK fitted running 320bhp through the front wheel to stick and handle at launch so god know what a corsa with 390bhp would do!

its a NO BRAINER really a AWD car that can easily take 400/400 or a corsa that is front wheel drive spinning front tyres into a smokey mess ....EVO all the way


On the second point of spending 10k on a evo....(i noticed no one has addressed that you want to go past 400) In this case your 10k will NOT be enough for a newer version and then a rod job or forged/stroker engine......Id be looking at a 5/6 forged and buy it already done.

You can get a decent 8 for around 6-8 K at the moment but then add a forge job say 4-5 K with best parts...then dependant on turbo anywhere from 2k-6k .

so at the cheapest your looking at 10k without clutch,brakes or suspension !

look for a 5/6 already done and have fun with it ....unless your made of cash then go for a 9 and spec the hell out of it with a 2.4 stroker and a gt35 turbo...and plenty of clean boxer shorts :awesome:

the gearbox suffers with the standard 240 bhp already.. and the 200hp corsas, seen one go bang ..had a stage 1 upgrade,240 bhp iirc.

they seem to be made of cheese!

I say you should pick up a nice 7 around the 400 + mark for your 10k or like jonny says go for earlier model with mad mods. Wise choice not spending the time and money on the corsa, there is really no point puttin that power through a corsa it can't take it well with like already pointing out. Nice to look at (arctic ones) but the list stops there for me I'm afraid.

Thanks for the help guys. I think an Evo is definately the way I'm going to go.

The 10k that I mentioned was the initial outlay. I then expect to spend a lot more playing with it. I have seen a few 8's with massive spec lists running around about the 400bhp for roughly 13k. From what I can gauge from what's been said, this would be the best idea. Or would these cars tend to have been abused?

I think when you go see the person selling the car, see the car and what comes with the car ie receipts ect you will be able to gauge whether it's been looked after of abused. If maintained well an Evo will take a lot of stick. If its high spec just make sure the work has been carried out by a known tuner and pref has receipts for it, over 400 you should be lookin at havin internal engine work done if its not been done walk away I would say as the car could be on last legs, with a couple of simple mods some can get a touch over 400
