ive been to look at an evo 5 on tuesday and hopefully will pick it up on saturday after i check it over again.
i took this picture and just today noticed this wet looking area, is this anything of concern? what could cause this?
would it concern you enough not to buy the car?
any feedback would be greatly appreciated :)
thanks.

Hi buddy!

From what I can tell, it looks to be oil residue that has been trickling down over time and has deposited around the sump gasket area.

It could be due to any number of reasons, a quick explanation would be to suggest that it may be due to a rocker cover seal that has perished or not been fitted correctly.

Either way buddy, there are too many scenarios as to how such a thing might happen and they ALL would warrant further investigation!

I would knock the price of the vehicle down or just leave it alone altogether, that is what I would do as a professional.

In your case buddy, I suggest that you keep looking and leave this one alone.

Dan,
what it boils down to is that you have supplied just a single picture and based on that, I have thrown a couple of suggestions your way.

Again, I will reiterate:

Either way buddy, there are too many scenarios as to how such a thing might happen and they ALL would warrant further investigation!

I can not advise you that the car is worth buying without seeing it myself, hence the advice to leave it alone.

I suggested that you look elsewhere too as I am positive that you will find a clean V very easily. They are not in short supply at the moment.

I will also point out that I am not saying that this one is a shed or is going to give you trouble for that matter.

All I am trying to say is that you have a very limited knowledge on the Evo's so unless you have a professional with you or an enthusiast/owner/trader with knowledge of what to look for as well as some knowledge on what caused this leak to occur, you are better off not going for it.

The other components that could be attributed to having a part to play in this leak include:

Sump Gasket
Air Conditioning Pump
Air Conditioning Hoses
Power Steering Pump
Power Steering Reservoir
Power Steering Hoses
Washer Fluid Bottle
Washer Fluid Hoses

Do you see what I am getting at buddy?

Looks like it has had a recent steam clean to me buddy!

Might explain why up top it looks like there is nothing to worry about;)

He might have replaced the Rocker Cover Seals and then had the bay steam cleaned which would mean that everything is fine now.

Have you asked the seller to explain what the leak is all about in the picture???

yes i get what you are saying mate, thanks.
i know there are many things it could be, i will take a good look at it tomorrow.
if it does turn out to be one of the above items im not too worried,im mainly concerned if the running of the engine (head gasket, block/head etc) are ok.

the bloke is a valeter so could explain a steam clean, the rest of the car is very, very tidy.

Do make sure to ask him what that deposit is and make sure you take a torch with you even if you are looking at it in the daytime.

Good luck!!!
