Hello chaps. Just after some advice.
Recently bought a 2003 evo 8 Fq300, 1 owner car with 91k Miles used as a daily by an old woman (rare I know) and completely standard.
Car has full service history but mainly done at a Subaru garage so because of this I was worried theyd not done the proper AYC,diff and transmission changes so I booked it in at NR autosport yesterday to have all this done. Anyway when I went to pick it up after they'd done the service the guy said they noticed there was no coolant in the reservoir so they topped it up and took it for a run and they said when they came back it had used some so they was abit concerned about a possible head gasket failure. Anyway, he topped up again while I was there and took the rad cap off and it was blowing bubbles but not gushing out. He said he definetley think its failed but I was a little pissed off at this because for one, I've had not problems with it, no smoke, no change on temp gauge, oil fine no gunk, water looks clean etc, not loss in power and not only that but it drove fine on the 3 hour journey back and also on the way to the service (these are he only 2 times I've used it as I've not long had it). Anyway he said it should be fine to use just don't put it under hard boost till I get it done. Anyway, on the way home all was fine (40 min motorway journey). Got home and decided to do a sniff test, that came back fine so went out again about half hour later and 15 mins into the journey there was steam pouring out the bonnet! Pulled over and the top of the radiator had split away from the radiator and was gushing water out onto the engine! I got it towed home and haven't ran it since.
Question is does this sound like a head gasket failure?
Would this create rad to burst open?
Would a failed thermostat cause the pressure? Or rad cap not releasing pressure.
And also the guy at the NR was topping it up from the overflow tank, could he have over filled it? And is the supposed to be used to top up? Thought it was just for the overflow? He was using this to measure if it had used fluid or not.
Sorry to go on so much. Just pissed me off as I've always been an Impreza man and this being my first Evo and already having problems.
