According to google I have found this:

Display Of Vehicle Registration Marks On Imported Vehicles

(which have a restricted space for a standard sized number plate)

Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if the vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval AND the vehicle's construction/design cannot accommodate standard size number plates

Height 64mm
Width 44mm
Stroke 10mm
Space between characters 10mm

But I cant find that on direct.gov.uk and can only find:
Displaying your registration number : Directgov - Motoring

Hi, im not going to say the words about what i do for a living...... but you can guess.... Some of the coppers around really dont know what theyre talking about with regards import vehicles and why should they... There is so much other rubbish law they actually need to know!!
Standard number plates should have letters 79mm high.
The Stick on plates that stick on ya bonnet are illegal as of 2003.

**Import vehicles can display letters of 64mm high if :
1. You can show that it is an import *AND*
2. That it was necessary to fit the smaller ones due to size of the space available to fit the plate.
Unfortunatley for you the Officer at the time can judge this "size available" on the street and give you the ticket. If you can proove otherwise "ie by measuring it up" contest the ticket and go to court.

To be honest if you contest the ticket, it may well be dropped before you get to court anyway, as they will ask you for your reason or defence. Either way, even if you loose, the fine wont be that much more. Worth a try.

I hate traffic cops!!
Good luck, Steve

thanx for your help guys after hearing what you had to say i phoned DVLA and they said my car was legal with a smaller plate so i phoned the police to tell them and get my plate back but the copper was off until today

on the night he stopped me he told me my plate was "too small" he has just phoned me and told me the lettering was 10mm short of legal and the size of plate did not matter ....he even suggested getting a smaller plate but keep the lettering legal because it was obstructing my intercooler......

he also told me he had to keep my reg plate as evidence now he is saying he will take a photo of it and give me my plate back today

i know the police have a nightmare job sometimes but i think this is a disgrace really nothing better to do...no wreckless drivers to catch....no car thieves to chase....no drink drivers to book ...just look out for people with nice cars and try to **** them over any way they can.....i mean to say ....10mm.....give me a break eh!...and they wonder why they get bad press
