Oil pump probs

Can any members cast any light as to what the tell tale signs would be if my oil pump had failed. As I have a very audible noise coming from the back of the engine and my oil light comes on upto about 3000 rpm. Many thanks

firstly check the oil level aswell as condition, the oil pump strainer could be blocked full of gunk to access this the sump has to come off
