juddering!!

hi all, i have a problem with my 6. under braking i get a really bad juddering, it is that bad it feels like a spaceship on re-entry!!! there is also a slight knock that can be heard under braking also. it gets worse the faster you go. so far the following has been done:

Discs skimmed
new pads
nearside balljoint
offside track rod end
wheels balanced

all of the above needed to be done however has not fully cured the problem, i did the track rod end and the ball joint today and seems to have got worse!

I am severely F****ed off and will be reaching for the matches soon!

any ideas or info would be greatly appreciated!

Who skimmed the discs and what did they say when they did the job???
Why did you not change the discs completely???
Have checked the drop links???
Does the ABS light flicker when braking???

My immediate response would be to suggest that you change the discs. I suggest that you take the car to an MOT station and have it checked over as they will be able to advise a little better than most of the grease monkeys. At the rate that you are going, you will end up changing the full running gear of the car!!!

Let me know how you get on. It may be wise to get a good second hand pair of discs if you can't afford new ones, that way if the problem is not rectified then you will not have forked out too much

a precision engineering firm skimmed them, i got them done trying to rule them out as the cause, they are not very old by the look of them, they said they were true but cleans the faces up anyway. i was trying to get a hold of a dti to check the runout on the discs but i dont think that is the problem. No problem with the abs at all, each time a found a problem i stopped looking and assumed that was the problem, the things i have changed needed doing anyway and i have lost a few knocks

My next stop is the drop links, its into mitsi tomorrow for some recall work so will try and scam a free diagnosis.

El, looks like you were on yth button. Mitsi checked the car out today and told me the discs were shot, the guys who skimmed them will be paid a visit!!!

yeah on the lookout now, just was p*ssed that i paid to have them skimmed and not rectify the problem. Mitsi said unless you skim the discs on the car then it wont work as you take out any variations in the hubs etc. in my opinion you are then fixing an effect of the problem and not the source??

I think the firm is only precise in knowing how to take your money buddy

Judder on braking can only be rectified with replacing the discs or going to a firm that has the right equipment to skim precisely to a thou. They may well have done the job to what they thought was necessary in order to keep your discs within a valid limit but ended up not taking off enough. If you go back and have a second skim done then that will no doubt make a difference that you are happy with.

Check what machining they use too whilst you are there.

If you have already replaced them with new ones then have the old ones redone and keep them as spare.

If not, then you know what to do.

for those who keep getting this problem time after time i suggest getting your discs cryogenically treated ( i use this method for engine components ) another word is nitrided and involves freezing the discs to take the stress placed on them completely away and gives a more uniform and stronger material

price is £8 per kg @ cryogenic treatment services and they will post them back to you aswell

on that note seriously think about having your engine components done if ur thinking of a rebuild as serious power is available using this method
