Intermittant speedo

Every now and again my speedo stops working when i'm driving along, i've tried hitting the top of the dash and it doesn't make any difference, the only thing that seems to sort it is accelerating fast then it kicks back into life. It's never stopped working for more than 10 seconds and in about 1000miles driving it's done it about 5 times.
Is this a fault anyone has come accross before?
I'm assuming it's just a bad connection but haven't had chance to look yet, i don't even know whether it's a cable or electronic. Hopefully i'll get it up on my lift tommorow for a look.

It may well be a faulty connection in the cluster, or your speedo sender is on the way out (which I very much doubt) or, this is what my money is on; the delimiter/converter having a loose connection or frazzled altogether.
