Hi guys,

I was under the car at the weekend changing diff oil and the transfer box oil and noticed that there is still a cat on the car. This was a surprise to me as the previous owner told me it was a decat and this was why the Engine Management light was on?! After a bit of research I did find that the E8 260 has 2 cats but this has confused me a little after searching for a decat to replace it with. The downpipe is after market and 3" and so is the cat back but does this mean that I need a cat made for the 260 or any Evo 7,8,9?

Also while I'm on this subject the Engine Management light went off a little while ago after being a bit heavy on the pedal, I didn't think anything of it until after putting it in storage for a month while I was offshore and when I came back it was back on! Its not affecting the way the car drives I don't believe so should I worry?

Last but not least while changing the diff oil no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get 0.7l in it. I'm guessing it took about 450-500ml I was thinking I'd let it settle a few days and try again tonight but thought I'd ask to see if you's had any ideas?? (Car was on the level BTW)

Decat- the 260 has different exhaust setup. So you'll probably need a 260 specific setup. You may just have a dummy cat tho.
Engine check light- you can flash the codes out to see what it is. Pin 1+4 together on the obd port.
Diff oil- you won't get the full amount in. As that is when it's new and completely dry.

Thanks for the reply rob

I thought the downpipe might have made the exhaust set up much the same as the others! What's the difference if you don't mind me asking?

I don't have anything to read the codes unfortunately. That's a relief, think I will try to get a little more in anyway!

Not sure on the 260 but you can read the fault codes on mine by bridging pins 1+4 with a paper clip and counting the flashes on the dash (engine light, ayc light (not on yours) and abs light).
Might be able to do similar on yours?

Does this look like the standard cat to you's? All the old exhausts from 260's on eBay look different?!

Not managed to flash the eml yet but will update when I do.

No car shouldn't put the engine management light in, probably something else putting that on I would if said.

That looks like a sport cat or fake cat, the 260 has another cat further forward

It has a downpipe so no cat up forward. Do you think it would benefit from a straight bit of pipe here instead?

Have the afr's checked. If there good then you won't need to change.
Or
If it's passed an mot emissions test then it's most likely a cat and will need replacing.

That looks to me like you've got a 789 downpipe and catback and someones bodged the cat in there, you should be able to fit a 3" 789 decat and get your fuelling looked at, the decat shouldn't bring an EML as the lambda is in the elbow, however I may be wrong

Ok so finally getting round to checking these codes out and iv come out with 23 & 54

Anyone had these codes before and know how to fix? 54 isn't such a problem but 23 is sounding a little more worrying?!

Cheers guys

no that not a 260 cat they do have 2 cats one in the down pipe and the other is where yours is they also have 2 sensors in the exhaust one by the turbo the other one by the second cat some decats come with a hole so you can screw the sensor back in or you can unplug it its in the drivers footwell but will put eml on so needs to be mapped out so goes of I have a mongoose exhaust any exhaust will fit from any evo 8 if you change it from turbo back fault code 23 I think is a cam sensor hope this helps.go to last page of attachment to see the exhaust lay out
