Evo 8 or 9?

Hi guys, been doing a bit of research into this and just a bit torn between the two really. I know the 9 has a bigger turbo and mivec, so more power as standard. But am I right in hearing the 8 is better for tuning? I wouldn't be looking at going crazy power any ways, prob around 400 - 450.
Also I know the 6 speed box is a weakness, one to keep away from?
Cheers

Gary @ APT says they are easier to tune ( 8MR ) I've been looking into buying a 9 and a few people have said there is no point along with Gary unless I go for a 9GT
Which I will do when the right one comes up.

A 400bhp evo is the perfect road car and fairly good on the track

I've never heard about 8s being easier to tune
Besides that you should buy whatever you like the look of and look for one in as good a condition you can find for your budget with any bits and pieces fitted to it that you would want if a tuned/modded one is what you are looking for.
A 9 may well be in better condition than an 8 due to its age but 9s are even getting on a bit now and if it hasn't been looked after could be a dog by now.

Ah awesome, just nice to know a few bits really and things to look out for when looking for one. Personally I like the look of the 9 IMO. If I was to get hold of a standard 9, would it be big £ to get it to 400 - 450? Don't really want any more power than that as i know things can start getting un reliable and don't want to be forking money every 5 mins for repairs

400 is easy enough to see and is the limit on the standard engine.

What's your budget?

A lot more ££ to safely get 450 than 400 ;)
Simple mods like exhaust, breathing, fuel pump, boost control and a map will see 400 brake on 7/8/9 Evos. FQ versions will have most as std.
My 9 FQ 360 for example only had a full Miltek exhaust added to it and because the 360 has a few extra bits as std. was about 400, a bit less on torque though.
Once you see any more than 400/400 you will start to put strain on a lot of parts and costs can start to spiral.

Good choice on model as the 8/9 are better ;) as for tuning...... The 9 with the mivec is stronger Nd can handle more power yes, the 8 how ever isn't a slouch and not very far behind to be honest. The 8 isn't easier to then but there and more people able to map the 8 ecu's as opposed to the 9's

Ah right fair shout so a lot bigger £ to get to 450 then like internals etc? That's prob gunna be about right then 400/400. I would imagine any ways that that is an all round good setup for the road? Can't really see me tracking it as such. Just fancy a lot more grip as running 300bhp fwd ATM, corners well but not under full power, as u can imagine, goes In a straight line haha

Yeah I do really like the 8/9 shape I think they are stunning. Been in a few as passenger and they are awesome.

All my personal opinion of course but for a 9 just getting used the road I would say -
400/400 power wise, any more and you are wringing the std. engines neck and you will eat std. clutches.
A set of lowering springs, not coil overs as they are too harsh for our shitty roads.
Stick with 17" wheels, I felt that 18's were a step backwards other than looks of course.
Decent pads, XP 8 or DS2500 will do there's no point in anything too track focused as they will need heat to work right.
Decent tyres, Eagle F1's are doing me fine on my 5 just now.
Anything else is wasted on the road but then if you do want to take it to a track day, which you should you are still good to go ;)
