my friend went to view an evo to buy and noticed that after stopping and turning the car off a lot of water was coming from underneath. after taking it for several runs the problem kept occurring. he noticed when lifting the bonnet the water was coming from the overflow pipe where the coolant is stored. the temp gauge did rise after 6 or 7 runs.does anybody know what problem this could be?

not the pipe going to the rad but the small pipe on the coolant tank just hanging over

Same as with any other car really, water pump, thermostat, blocked radiator.

Check the rad cap seal, all coolant hoses and the rad itself, if there is a leak or airlock anywhere the system will pressurise and force the coolant up and out of the over flow

Need the right pressure cap otherwise the boiling point of the coolant will be lower, also a good grade of antifreeze is needed. If the antifreeze mixture is weak then that will lower the boiling point too.

Get a new cap as you know the seal isn't great and then check again, otherwise you'll be on a wild goose chase costing you unnecessary time, money and the possibility of damaging the engine.

If the cap dosent work I'd advise a sniff test to see if the head gaskets blown but DO the cap first!

Hope all goes well :)
