Hi Guys,

Can anyone advise a specialist garage in Berkshire or near to there, that I can take my car to. I have a feeling that my engine needs re building or the bottom end is gone. Car still runs, oil light flickers on and off, rattles when revved a little bit.

I need to try and diagnose the problem - Don't mind taking it somewhere to pay to get a diagnostic, with a view to it needing a re build or engine replacement.

Any ideas,

Many Thanks.

as you say when revved a bit it 'rattles' = bottom end knocking.
the 4's are weak.
if its coming from top of the engine in head, its the tappets.
two common engine faults.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Also I think the turbo was over boosting. When full throttling in 3rd, 4th and 5th. It will jult, as if the engine was cutting out. Is this over boosting. Also what causes over boosting. It was boosting fine.

Cheers
Ollie

its hard to say like this.
have you got a boost gauge to check the pressure'
it could not be over boosting, the actuator could be sticking.
so it seems like its fine in 1st & 2nd gears'

if you still have a 4 engine in the car unfortunatly it wont be worth rebuilding as the 4 engine suffers from crank walk :(

It is easy to check if you have an evo 4 engine in by looking at the engine number.. if it has a "T" in its a 4.

To save a few pennies you could put in a short block

many thanks

A short block is a bottom end. for instance you would use your existing head and ancillarys and replace your bottom end with a working block.. as it is your bottom end that has failed

Ollie,
If your engine is knocking then it will not take an Evo specialist to tell you this. Take it to any reputable garage in your area. Ask friends or relatives, some one must be using a good grease monkey in your area. Take it for a check over only at this stage and do not commit to any work being carried out

Let us know how you get on.

El,

Thanks for you advise - I'm 100 percent sure that its my bottom end!! My car is being collected today by a Jap Specialist in Oldham called 'Need A Part UK Ltd' and they are sticking a re conditioned evo 6 engine in and then they are going to run a full diagnostics on the car to and also, they are going to look into that over boosting problem to, if it is over boosting. I'll let you know how it all goes - The price seems pretty dam good and they are collecting it and delivering it back to me.

Cheers,
Ollie

How much are they charging and what will they be doing with your old block???

Is it an IV engine or a later one that they are going to fit???

I have an evo 4 with an evo 4 engine and they are taking my old engine and replacing it with a reconditioned evo 6 engine for £2,300 + VAT - That includes fitting, full service, oils, diagnostics, road test, 3 months parts and labour warranty, also they are collecting it from me in Berkshire and bringing it back to me.

Please tell me that sounds like a good deal.

Cheers

You have done OK with that Ollie so there is nothing to be worried about. Are they going to be keeping your old engine?????
I presume that they will be, but if they are not ,then you might want to have it back, I have some new boys that I am training up and I don't mind buying it off you for them to faf around with.

Something to consider anyway.

I have done similar deals in the past for people and I can tell you they will not be making much off you at all!!!

Where did you get their details from in the first place???

I got there details via a website called Cheap Car Parts & Accessories, Engines, 4x4 Parts. Used Euro & Jap Car Parts From Online Car Breakers (www.247spares.co.uk) - I filled out a quote form and then got emailed about 6 or 7 quotes via deferent companies and a chap from 'Need a part UK' called me with in seconds of me receiving his quote. None of the others bothered to phone me and he sounded very knowledgeable (Plus his phone was ringing non stop in the background, therefore sounded busy and not just desperate for the business) and he was very helpful and was prepared to negotiate. So I did a deal with him. I don't normally go on websites like that, but gave it a try. Also because he was the only guy to phone me - It made me happy to give him my business.

I will let you know as soon as I get it back!!! Can’t wait!!

I'll let you know re the old engine - But I'm pretty sure they are keeping it.

Cheers

I am sure that you will be all right. Do not pay up front buddy and make sure that they give you something with an address on it when they collect the car from you, unless you will be going with it.

Nah Dave, I have some relatives that are over from South America so I am taking it easy for the duration of the School hols.

Add to that, John Boys business is ticking over quite well as I have stream lined it so that a friend is uploading everything and I am just on the despatching. It has made life a hell of a lot easier for all concerned.

Except for John Boy of course who is crying about the heat over there in Japan and the fact that he can't get any decent food where he is right now:D

I told him to sit it out until November and that I will replace him through the Winter;)
