We?ve been teased by a concept car and spy shots for months now, but the new Mitsubishi Evo X has finally broken cover.

The first few testers have also had their first taste of the car, and it seems none of the Evo magic has been lost.

Whereas the previous three Evos have simply been minor overhauls of the same car, this latest model is entirely new. Based on a brand new platform and body shell, it is larger, heavier and more advanced than the model it replaces, but promises to be just as exciting to drive. It is also more refined, with a cl***ier interior, intended to appeal to a more mainstream market.

However, the hardcore contingent won?t be disappointed. The new car boasts 280bhp and 311lb ft of torque, with more powerful versions expected soon after launch. Still 4WD, Evo X is available with a twin-clutch paddle operated gearbox, said to offer impressively fast gear changes.

With a vast array of electronic trickery intended to make the new car handle more sharply than previous models, and a brand new aluminium block turbocharged engine, the Evo X should be worth every of the ?32000 you?ll need to buy one.

The car goes in sale in May next year.
