Can't Pass Emissions Test

Evo IV

Engine mods:
Blitz 2 core racing radiator
Billion radiator hoses

HKS type RS intake w/filter

Exhaust
S-Tec tubular exhaust manifold
Blitz 70mm downpipe
Buddy Club cat-back
stock cat converter; looks to be stock could be gutted :hm:

**I did not do the exhaust set-up on the car so I have no idea if the cat is intact, the tone is very deep & low** I think the cat is still intact.

Recent rebuilt engine w/minor head work & valve job.

The car is too rich at idle; according to the machine, it was at about 11.5afrs. I had a Evo 6 ECU tuned by Russ of HQ Performance from a wrecked hill climb car and it read about 1.3%. I then threw in the exhaust silencer for the Buddy Club exhaust thinking it would restrict some flow, the readings jumped up to 1.8!

I previously talked with Russ and he mentioned to me that the tune was on the rich side.

I put the stock ECU back in the car and went to test again. The reading are at 0.9% the car is allowed 0.5%.

Do I need a tune or do I need some more exhaust restriction? I have 6 days to fix this

Why do you think the exhaust silencer made the readings jump up??? I wanted to try to put the silencer back in for the testings with the stock ECU but I was scared it would make higher readings again.

Help :wtf:

if its failing on fueling the ecu is running closed loop then test the lambda as thats probably kaput.

I'm getting no codes from either ECU while the car is running. Wouldn't a bad o2 throw a code?

Antony@indigo-gt can prob supply you one of these.

He is on here so send him a pm.

Failing that find another tester lol :)

How do I make sure it's bad though? I have no scanner and no codes flashing?

I'm in Southern Spain, I need a way to make sure the o2 is bad, I hate changing parts to find out something else was wrong....

Is there a realistic way of knowing?

Ask Antony how to check it :)

if your lambda is knackered then you NEED a new one as it will also effect your fueling in your map (open loop)

How can it affect open loop parts of the map when it is effectively non existant as far as the ECU is concerned when running in open loop? ;)

It will only affect closed loop parts of the map (ie idle & cruise). Open loop does not rely on any sort of feedback from the sensor.

To check it use a multi-meter, the voltage across it should fluctuate between 0.1-0.9v

Failing emmissions comes down to either a faulty lambda (as has been said) or non-working cat converter.

trims carry over into open loop ;)

From what I have read on the subject of trims being carried over to open loop, some people say they do, but only when fuel trims are WAY, WAY off. However the likes of John Banks & others who have actually done tests disagree with this and have not noticed any real difference with fuel trims affecting open loop fueling in their tests.

have you not noticed how afrs will be constant when mapping but if you check the same car at a later date there is sometimes a difference in reading when nothing else is changed (other than ltft)

Can't say I've noticed any real difference TBH. Sometimes a tiny bit different (0.1-0.2 AFR),but just neglegable differences really.
