Was just reading about the ayc pump

Mines is code 82 so ordered a pump but if it doesn't damage anything and you can drive without it why replace it

What actual damage dose it cause and whats the worst thing that can happen

Its got to do something if not everyone would just leave it broken and remove the bulb

If you don't fix it you don't have the yaw control working, and as it's a very tech bit of kit and sets the car aside from rivals people want it working, it has it's benefits, it keeps you on the road when your not switched on and gives you better traction.

With it off you are simply running an open diff setup and there is less control there and the car is free to do what it wants so some will say yes it's better because there are no driver aids, for example I know someone who rallies a V and has it unplugged as he is adamant he is slower with it on.

I doubt that as without the AYC active, if either rear wheel loses traction then it gets all the torque leaving none for the one with the traction and the car slows down substantially and is not very controllable. You won't normally get this on the road but on a track or rally you'd defo get it.

It has an open diff on the rear, and the AYC pump generates pressure that pushes hydraulic plates that control the torque split. With no pump the plates don't operate so it is left as an open diff. The RS has a mechanical limited slip diff at the rear so it does mechanically what your AYC is doing electronically.

It's like drive by wire...modern cars use sensors to determine pedal position and use that to control the throttle. Older cars have a wire that goes from the pedal to the throttle. They both work, just one is mechanical and one electronic, however as with all techie solutions to mechanical problems, there is simply more to go wrong.

An AYC with broken AYC is not the same thing as an RS diff.

I have tried having this debate with him but stage for stage he swears he is slower :s

When I get some free time at work ill be building my pump back up and putting it back on as the 3 lights get on my nerves

Thank you Aidy you have just answered what i have always thought

I have driven a car with fully working AYC and a car with Broken AYC and a car with NO AYC ie RS Diff conversion and all 3 car's drive totally different from each other My own VI had fully working AYC and now has an RS Diff conversion and TBH now i am get use to the RS Diff i do prefer it over the AYC you just have to now the car's limit and be aware more in wet weather:razz:

in short you're get more under steer/ over steer with it not working! More so than one with an rs diff (lsd) as your's will be open.

From my own experience, my car was defo slower on track with a broken pump (didn't realise it was broken til i went ) I did two practice laps at a sprint then gave up, I was a few seconds off my normal time on the same track. Funny thing was....I did two practice laps, one of which was just abandoned, no proper timed laps, and I still came in mid-field LOL which meant my broken standard car on road tyres with no practice was still faster than half the folk's modded worked cars

Here's a pic, you can see the inside wheel lighting up, robbing the car of all its torque. It's like the clutch is slipping...the revs rise and rise but the car gets slower and slower.

Edit: So all those people with AYC warnings on the dash that say the car "drives fine"....bollox

Yep that's what happened to my mate's 7 when his ayc broke! I think have it working or in for a rs diff as i can't see why your'd want an open diff.

Nice one aidy. Same happend on my vii. Tried doing a track day with no Ayc and as I was trying to get power down all it did was spin and pour smoke off the inside rear wheel.
