If the car's from Southern Ireland you need to register the car with the DVLA. As youngy has said you will need to mot the car, take insurance with you and pay the registration fee and pay for either 6 or 12 months road tax. If the car is from Northern Ireland, you can leave as it is. The logbook is more or less the same as the Uk one.
You can fly out to Ireland and drive the car to the docks, get on a ferry and drive home if it's registered in the North. Or you can have the car delivered. If you live near Liverpool, you can have the car sent over unaccopmpanied to Liverpool docks for approx. £150
